Sabal palmetto seedling

Featured Replies

i have a Sabal palmetto seedling that my buddy shipped to me fr Florida and I have I have it in my bedroom for the winter. It could probably take the cold outside here in Keizer, Oregon zone 8b/9a but I wanted to keep it growing through the winter. Since I have had it it has put out 1 strap leaf and is now developing a leaf with splitting leaf margins. I am shocked by how fast it is now growing. The leaf that it is currently developing has gotten to where it is now in about a month. I keep a daylight led on it for 12 hours a day. I noticed that when I switched to a more warm white led as a way to alternate the lighting spectrum to provide more of a balanced lighting spectrum is when it really started accelerating it's growth rate. I keep it in a West facing window also and i keep this room at about 80 degrees during the day and about 70 at night.

Looks good. You're giving it the things it wants and needs: bright light/sun and heat -the more of both the better (80 is good, 90 better).

The things I do for my plants. These 3 pictures are current. The original was from approximately 2 weeks ago

The center leaf is growing pretty quick

Nice heal!

Nice it should be fine.  I'd plant it in spring.  I have two planted here in 7a that have been out for 2 years just a little bigger.  They are just coming out of strap leaf.  I don't plan to protect it unless it gets well under 10F.  It took 15F in Nov like a champ.

Thank you. I'm hoping it really helps it develop a strong root system

Wow they look really good. What fertilizer do you use? I can't wait for mine to be out of strap leaf. I can't plant mine quite yet because I'm probably going to move this year and I want to take it with me

What other palms do u grow?

That particular palm's parents have very thick trunks and retain their boots.  That should keep some strong tissue between the cold and the bud.

If other forum members are interested, here are the parents with the fruit coming from the palm near the sprinkler head: Sabal palmetto - Lucille St. Bartow, FL

The photo in the link is approximately 1.5 years before seed harvest.  Here is a more recent Google maps photo from US-98 in Bartow: Sabal palmetto from US-98

In ground - Sabal Louisiana, Sabal Brazoriensis,  Sabal Birmingham, Sabal Minor (Several kinds), Needle palm, Trachycarpus Fortunei, Trachycarpus Wagnerianus.  Going to try a Butia x Jubaea soon.  Seems the Sabal variants do well to 5F or so the Minors will take 0F or less and the Trachy 10F or so.

Fertilizer for in ground palms, Palmgain or Osmocote plus.  Osmocote plus in pots.
