Yucca love

Guadalupe Mountains. Including the North and South access points to the National Park, and areas outside of it in Texas and New Mexico . Yucca elata, torreyi, and faxoniana. Agave neomexicana, lechuguilla, and the natural hybrids of the two Agave x gracilipes. Dasylirion leiophyllum. Echinocereus viridiflorus, coccineus, enneacanthus var. brevispinus and reichenbachii. A huge mound of Coryphantha macromeris. Opuntia macrocentra variants, polyacantha, and other hybrids.Cylindropuntia imbricata, Arbutus xalapensis (Texas Madrone Tree) and others.

I didn’t hike the Guadalupe Peak this visit but here are pictures from other trips, including pictures of Yucca baccata and the south peaks high elevation form of Agave neomexicana, which looks more like other forms of parryi.

Yep, forgot a shot, the important one. 🙃 Anyway..

As you can see, even being torched into near oblivion doesn't necessarily mean the end of  these guys.

Yeah, never count Yucca baccata out. As long as it has roots it will infinitely come back. I’ve learned that just from growing them in containers.

50/50 call.. Well established?  tough as nails for sure.. On the other hand, One i planted at the old house didn't survive the house being empty / no water applied to it  Dec. to July...  Planted spring of '21. Was getting it's feet firmly settled by the time we'd moved in Dec.

You're right. Here in Germany they suffer from to much water. Lost a few  in different place. Didn't find a wet tolerant type until now.

Sometimes, i think it is just luck of the draw..  There's a nice baccata specimen in a public demo garden that looked great for years. Last time i'd seen it, it looked pretty beat up.  There at least, how it was looking when i  saw it could be the result of damage caused by people, or something else but was a little surprised regardless..  Have seen a couple others around the valley that showed a similar tendency, while others i've seen look perfect.

Considering the more than adequate amount of rain it received last summer, after planting it earlier,  found it more surprising the one i'd planted couldn't handle a few months of heat/ no water ( April- July, when the house was sold ) While winters are reasonably warm here, moisture can stay in the soil for much longer than in summer and it looked fine until after late spring heat kicked in.

Whom ever Opendoor, the broker involved in selling the house, had maintaining the yard ( More like cut weeds once or twice the entire time the house sat empty ) did spray weed killer everywhere there at one point ..While i wouldn't think herbicide would hurt a Yucca,  maybe it did?  ..anyway,  It would likely get relocated anyway since the new home owner has plans to re-design the front of that house.

How did you revive them? Have a couple I bought bare root that are struggling mightily after a hot Summer with no rain. @Cycadsavy

*Does anyone here ever heard about Yucca schottii x gloriosa coming from Phoenix? Someone on Ebay Germany is selling a plant which shall be a cross of schottii and gloriosa. Fist plant shall be brought to Germany in the nineteen sixties. Origine of this plant was Phoenix, Arizona 

I can't remember any Y. gloriosa in Arizona.

I myself haven't heard of such a cross here.. So i might be a bit skeptical, esp since it is an ebay listing where anyone can say anything about whatever they are selling. 

That said, ....that doesn't mean one doesn't exist / was passed around in the past.  I'm sure there are Y. gloriosa  specimens in someone's yard somewhere in the valley / surrounding areas to play around with, so you never know.

Some of the nurseries in Tucson who have been around for quite some time might be worth contacting, just to get their thoughts on the subject.

That's also my fear. Especially on Ebay there are so many new fantasy creations.  Let's go on with reliable sources. Unfortunately this year the market seems to be out of sale 😪

As someone who lives in the middle of a pine forest, thank you. These pics are amazing and it's so cool to see what's out there. It's so cool to see so many vivid pictures of something other than boring ass pine trees.

Yep, that's one reason i avoid Ebay temptations as much as possible.. Seen too many listings by too many folks trying to make a buck, even if that means listing something that is an obvious fake ...that said yes, there are legit sellers who list things on there as well.

Been going through the post -covid slowdown motions trying to find certain stuff also.. Luckily, it seems some harder to find stuff is starting to become available again as nurseries start bulking up their inventories..

You're in the lucky position to get plants , here in Europe the only solution is seeds. There's only one backdoor as I have a friend in Switzerland who can receive small cuttings and rhizomes and forward them to me. What a terrible regulation 💩

What I believe to be “pure” Yucca thompsoniana growing east of Fort Stockton. They are smaller than the form typically in cultivation, which hybridizes with Yucca rostrata . There is an even small dwarf form that is a hybrid with Yucca reverchonii. Neither of those species grew in this area.

Amazing pictures like each time. And so many wonderful looking Yuccas, especially the three above. The second picture looks insane, I would love to have one in my garden. Have you been able to collect seeds?

When I went down to take some pics today it looks like some stuff bloomed last year.  I thought I captured an image of the Dasylirion quadrangulatum and the Agave americana together but that must  not have taken.  Anyway, here's the Yucca rostrata with an old, dry bloom stem on it.

I believe it is Yucca treculeana. I collected the seed at a ranch in Cotulla, but it was a cultivated plant around the house, so it could be non-native or a possible hybrid. Of the 5 plants, only 2 look the same. I have one that is glaucus, but it hasn't bloomed yet. The pictured yucca split three ways at a very convenient height, as opposed to a split at the ground level or much higher.

🤪For some reason I thought Silas Sancona posted that. Treculeana is what I initially thought but it didn’t make sense for Arizona. It was lacking the filament of schidigera, arizonica, etc. is why asked. That makes sense.
