Brahea edulis(?) showing waxy leaves. How common is this?

I had bought several years ago a plant as B edulis. Rather slow in growth but I was always thinking that it was the particular spot in my garden to blame for the slow growth rate. The plant used to have a nice bright green foliage color. Until I have observed today some build up of wax on the newer leaves. Anyone observed a similar change of look on own Brahea edulis? If it is not edulis, any idea what else it could be?
