Is snowing here in Cordoba, very unusual, in fact is the first time i see  the snow on the palms leaves here.- Not too cold, just 0° C.- Will try to post a picture soon.-

We are getting a cold winter, because the average high is low.-

Where´s the global warming???

At first glance it seems unreal that snowfall can occur at latitude 25S[same as Miami  :o  but both Johannesburg & Pretoria are 4000-5000+ feet/1200-1500+ meters in elevation.

Dennis, what were the conditions at sealevel in Durham?

Hi Happ

It was our coldest day on record apparently, min was 10c when I went out at 06:45 (my garden is at about 200m ASL) on the way to work it was 16c (08:00) then at about 10:00 the temp dropped to 12c with strong SW winds and rain. stayed that way for the rest of the day. The next morning berg winds had started to blow and the temp was 13c at 08:00!

Global warming doesn't mean every place will be warmer and wetter.  Some places will actually be colder and drier.  You just have to look at the entire map to see what how a particular area is changing.

Hi Happ

No frost here at all. I hope it stays that way.

W had our coldest morning yesterday at 4.5c, this morning 5c......not pretty. down at the river at the bottom of the garden the elephant ears are still green....so there couldnt have been any frost there....who knows. My temps are waaaay colder than the forecast temps as I am in a steep valley with a river at the bottom and 200m ASL, down closer to the sea I never had a temp below 11c... so I could kick myself for buying in a valley. Oh well we live and learn. At least I still have coconut palms looking suprisingly good after all these cold nights. The only thing that is keeping them alive and well must be the +-25c days.

Cheers

With those temperatures you are safe  :D  Comparing your latitude - 30S]  it gets much colder at 30N [Texas/Central Florida].

Must be a very warm Indian Ocean & protective mountains, right?

Hi Happ

I dont understand why the temp doesnt drop below that 4.5c mark, on Tuesday night at 22:00 the temp was 7c, there was no wind to speak of. Why does the temp not drop lower than the above 4.5c? Same thing last winter, I am not complaining I just dont understand why.

Down closer to the sea it is very warm, the average sea temp this time of year is 22c, they have it easy.

Durban climate data : http://worldweather.wmo.int/035/c00137.htm

Those are fantastic temperatures/year around warmth w/o getting too hot

Interesting similarity to S. California.  Even at your valley elevation [656 feet/200m] it appears Durban is a solid USDA zone 11 [is there a climate zone map for South Africa?

Here's a comparison w/ LA @ my elevation [910 feet/277m]
