Hey all,

i had a few minutes to snap some pictures of my next door neighbors palms this afternoon. Here are some that caught my eye...

This is a Ravenea that stumps me. It’s been a pretty quick grow. It’s also pretty stocky and has a very dense, upright crown. I’ve considered (and ruled out) sp. “new” and glauca. No idea what it is thoughts?

Euterpe edulis, reaching for the sky. Nice wide growth rings tell you how fast it’s growing.

More later..

A behemoth Dypsis prestoniana. Note the small D. Robusta to the right, purchased at the same time, the same size. The grower assured my friend that robusta was the way faster of the two. Ha!

Finally, a really nicely developing Acanthophoenix. Could be rouselli or perhaps a rubra/ crinita hybrid. We got these years ago and even Jeff Markus was unsure. There are also crinita and rubras in the yard to compare with. Definitely something different. Thanks for looking!

Boy, no kidding. It’s taken a few years, but it’s really, really attractive.

That's the closest we'll have to the lipstick palm in CA.

Matt, I don’t think so. There are a couple of those in ground to compare to as well. Too robust. A number of years ago, a collector sold a bunch of 15 gallon Raveneas to Phil at jungle music. There were no names on them, but they were different from others I was familiar with. Mine turned into what has been sold as sp. “new”. The neighbors is just unrecognizable to me. Certainly similar to glauca that we’re used to, but not quite as far as I can tell.

Yeah Joe, I thought the same. I always figured it would be a palm that either would not survive here, or would never show the color that it got in habitat. Wrong on both counts!
