Zone 9b - King Palm, should I fertilize year round?

Hey guys,

This would be my first post here. I'm looking forward to learning more from this community. I was wondering if I should be fertilizing my Archcontophoenix Cunninghamiana (King Palms) going into the fall here. I think I read somewhere that it's recommended to feed in July (which I did) and then again in October. I just wanted to make sure that in my climate zone of 9b, this would be a good idea. These palms are in their first season with me. I planted them in the ground in July and they're facing South and South West along the side of my house.

If I should feed this month, should I carry on feedings every 3 months?

Thank you very much.

There are differing opinions on this. Most will say not to fertilize in winter. Some believe the salt in the fertilizer will make the water in the plant more difficult to freeze, therefore making it more tolerant of the cold. Makes sense, but is it true? Who knows. I fertilize my bulletproof palms year around. My zone pushers I stop fertilizing in October and resume in March. If I had a king in your area I would probably fertilize it all year long. But that’s just me.

Welcome fellow King Palm Bay Area grower. I'm located in Livermore and have a triple that has put on 10 ft or so in 5 years. What I do is fertilize up until Oct. But, it may do even better with more fert.

Welcome to PalmTalk! You're invited any time to my Los Altos garden. Several big mature King palm groves grace my landscape along with 130 other Palm species. I feed mine in April, July, and October. Would love to see a picture of your's.
