Some Butia and a cross...

Featured Replies

The one on the left is presumably Butia odorata.  The one on the right is possibly Butia eriospatha.  Not sure.  The fruit are red.  Darold Petty didn't you say you thought it looked like B.  eriospatha?  I can't really remember.

This one was giving to me by Paul as a Jubaea but I'm pretty sure it's a Jubaea x Butia.  What do you think?

Any mention of Butias reminds me of the time years ago when I had a border terrier.  Every September and October, as if she consulted a calendar, she would spend hours in the backyard and wouldn’t come in until late at night.  It wouldn’t be until Saturday mornings when I would water the garden that I would find out what was going on.

Each week there would be one or two dead squirrels on the ground and she would stand next to them proudly showing off her work.   The squirrels were attracted to the green unripened fruit of the Butia odorata, the dog was attracted to the squirrels, and I would end up sweeping the dead squirrels into the garbage can.

I would praise her, “ Good girl!”.  What else could I say, “Bad girl!”?  So the Butia odorata palm tree and the border terrier dog teamed up against their common adversary: squirrels.
