New Caledonia palms make up a good portion of my palm collection.  I try to collect as many species within a genus as possible.  The Burretiokentia genus has five species.  It took a while, but I was able to collect them all.  The hapala and vieillardii are the oldest.  Khogiensis came next then dumasii and grandiflora.  The size of the palms will illustrate this.

Well done, Joe!  That Hapala is something else.

Thanks, Steve.

It's pretty beefy.  I would say 8-9" diameter.

Real nice Joe!  They look very happy there in your garden!

I have all but the Dumasii.  They love the coastal climate !  All mine came from Floribunda.  Grandiflora seems slow for me.

I’m getting 2 fronds a year from Grandiflora. I found Khogiensis to be slowest and steady. Least sun tolerant of the four as well.

Interesting that it sounds like the the koghiensis is slower than the grandiflora as I thought the grandiflora were the more challenging plant here in California.  I'm only growing B hapala and B koghiensis so can't comment on the speed of the other three, but I do get at least 2 new fronds out of the koghiensis every year.  My koghiensis is close to the size of your dumasii right now so not nearly as mature as your koghiensis.  I haven't counted how many new leaves I get on my hapalas but matching your experience they definitely outpace the koghiensis.

I find that B.dumasii is the best grower of all species in my garden, and you get that great new leaf colour as well!   Can't wait for it to get to trunking size....Joe, your collection is great!   I have had to start all over again in my new garden.

Tracy - koghiensis is just not as robust of a palm for me.  The red leaf from it is pretty nice though.

Daryl - Thanks!  The dumasii was very small when I planted it out.  It should start to take off now.

Your garden will look amazing.

I have multiples of each in the ground.   This genus should be planted more in coastal SoCal.

Excellent job, Joe! I have tried them all and none of them do well in my hot very limited coastal influenced garden. I need to move out west!
