Rabbits love bismarkia nobilis

So I have 2 Bismarck seedlings. Just over a year old. They have been on my outside gravel play area. I know rabbits did this they have water my wife’s precious flowers before. I’m lucky he spared me the spear other wise this plant would probably be a goner. He ate half of my other one as well but spared a lot more. Anyone else have rabbits eating there palms. See members on here said put your seedlings on the ground but all my little guys I put them on a table outside just because of this

all you can see is a little spear here. A day ago there was 2 12” fronds

Critters like to munch stuff!  Sorry bout your Bizzies. I've got a couple raccoons that like to tip certain plants and have a lil snack. Made a meal out of the tender growth of a potted Pony Tail palm a couple weeks ago. Last week I was in the back yard weeding near dark and one came up from behind and startled me while I was hoeing, the lump on his head from the hoe will probably remind him not to do that again soon! Hope he tells his friends & family.

And rats love Dypsis seedlings!    Luckily for you Rob that the rabbit left you a leaf or two.  I had around a dozen Dypsis pembana hybrid seedlings back in June and in one weekend I was down to 5 after they nibbled the rest of them completely.  They also killed off the majority of my Livistona saribus seedlings but left the nearby Sabals and Washies alone!  Rats!!    I also lost an in-ground Livistona decora to the ox beetle.  Needless to say it's been a frustrating summer as we're still awaiting the first rain since June!

Summer was short here and not normal I’m sorry about your issues as well we got more rain in 2 days than we did all summer as well still dry and not normal !

Thankfully I had multiple seedlings and managed to keep at least a couple of each.  I forgot to mention that the destroyed seedlings were on a shelf unit well off the ground, but the critters still managed to be "palm snobs" and climb up past the common stuff to get them!  LOL  I think all of the new construction going on around our subdivision is causing them to be displaced from their rural habitats so I'm hopeful it's not a permanent problem.

Seems like many areas are either much drier than usual or much wetter.  Our weather has not been unusual but hotter than "normal" with nearly 50 consecutive cloudless days of 38° C (100° F) or higher at my place.  We tend to be a couple of degrees warmer than the airport.  The days are getting shorter so perhaps this hot streak will be coming to an end some time this month!

I sprung a kangaroo chewing on the fronds of a young Alexandria in my backyard. We used to have a couple of pet roos and they were heavily monitored after that whenever they were in the yard. They like eating rose bushes, that didn't worry me because I don't like the horrible spiky things but my wife likes them, I wasn't terribly impressed when I caught them chewing my palms though.

My biggest problem here is the dang squirrels that seem to devour the leaves off of my younger palms. I woke up this morning with half of a windmill palm seedling completely gone.

I had "feral" feline issues. I'm allergic to cats, nevertheless, to add insult to injury a couple of them used to jump the fence and scratch my then coconut seedlings. As if they were their toys or something...

One even killed one of my D. plumosa.

Are you sure that it is rabbits?

Here, that behaviour would more likely indicate rats.

Ricky, for yours perhaps a wire cage thing until they are bigger, ugly I know but maybe just in the high risk season?

Cheers Steve

It is not dead, it is just senescence.

Yes rabbit ford sure. No rats here. My area is infested with rabbits. Oh well since were going into fall and we didn’t have much of a summer I brought the plants into my palm room early where it’s nice and warm and hopefully they recover well
