Hyphaene Fort Myers seedling

Featured Replies

I collected some seeds in downtown Fort Myers under the big Hyphaene that is labeled as Thebaica.  (possibly mislabeled)
I suspected them to be sterile, I left them in a plastic bag since I thought there was no male around to pollinate them.

A month or so later I look and see a seed on the top has germinated with a big taproot .  I opened the bag and found only 2 other seeds that had germinated.

After looking on palmtalk I found past threads and about 3 other palmtalkers have attempted to germinate these fruits with no luck.

Do you guys think they could a hybrid from a nearby Bismarkia pollen?   Also I saw someone mentioned there is another Hyphaene (gender unknown?) at the Edison Ford Estates which is around 1 to 1.5 miles away I think?

Has a Bismarkia x Hyphaene never been seen before in cultivation ?

Does anyone know if the Hyphaene at Edison Estates is a male?  Also what species is it?

Thanks

It seems that they have life in it.Try to grow the once germinated and once they are in ground the palm's characteristic qualities will be visible.I doubt that its a hybrid with bismarkia.

And what i feel is the entire batch in that bag could germinate provide you don't let them rot.i.e little bit of additional care.

Keep us update about its progress. All the best.

Kris.

... and what should one one do or not do, so that seeds don't rot?

i potted up the seedlings and a couple of the bigger ungerminated seeds.  (most of them were small and light weight pretty sure those are sterile)

Just hoping to find out about that Hyphaene at Edison Estates and if it is a male. ?
If it is that is quite the distance for pollen to travel, if it is not a male, then possibly this Hyphaene has hermaphodited ?

Also I wonder if anyone has already tried to cross Hyphaene with Bismarkia that would definitely be a sweet hybrid.
