List of fertile hybrids

Featured Replies

Hi, everyone, I'd like to propose a list of fertile palm hybrids. Everyone who has a hybrid has this kind of knowledge. I list some of them below. Please, feel free to complete it...

- Elais guineenses x oleífera

- Jubaea chilensis x Butia capitata

- Syagrus romanzoffiana x Butia capitata

- Brahea armata x brandegeei

- Butia eriospatha x microspadix

- Trachycarpus nanus x wagnerianus

- Copernicia hospita x macroglossa

- Sabal palmetto x causarium

I am personally growing the Syagrus x Butia hybrid as well as the Brahea armata x brandegeei and a few others that you did not mention.  Are you wanting us to add others to your list or just relate personal experience with these you have listed?  I'll list some others that I am growing.

Washingtonia robusta x filifera

Chamaedorea radicalis x microspadix

Phoenix reclinata x theophrasti (I think all Phoenix species can hybridize with any other Phoenix so lots of possible crosses - my favorite being P. rupicola x P. roebelenii)

Dypsis pembana x madagascariensis (I think there are many possible hybrids within the Dypsis such as Dypsis decaryi x leptocheilos but I have no personal experience with them)

I'm just trying to make a list of hybrids that are fertile. If you have a fertile hybrid, let me know so I can add to the list.

I've read somewhere that somebody had a F2 Butyagrus, but I'll delete it from the list.

Sorry, I missed the part about the hybrid being fertile.  Of the ones I listed, the Brahea armata x brandegeei, Washingtonia robusta x filifera and Dypsis pembana x matagascariensis were all grown from seed off hybrid mother (F2) so you can add the last two to your list.  I believe you could also add all the possible Phoenix hybrids as well since the female hybrids produce viable seed when pollinated unless you are only interested in listing monecious palms.

I'm not clear what we are talking about here.  Fertile with itself, or fertile with other things?

For instance, a Mule (BxS) is infertile with itself, but can pollinate/be pollinated by other plants.

My impression is what is being looked for is a palm  or in this case specifically a hybrid palm that will self sow.

Someone has made the crossing of Allagoptera arenaria X Syagrus rom., Is there?

I did it last year and I still do not know if I will succeed.

Hi, Ben. I'm looking for both cases. If know any, please let me know!

Afew of the F2 Butyagrus are sorta fertile or more likely they self pollinate or get pollinated by Butia capita --- some of them you just see seedlings underneath trees --- but it is pretty rare --- I suspect the Butyagrus would not accept Sromanzoffianum pollen --- I believe Charles Raulerson tried to do this for 30+ years and only produced a handfull right b efore his death

I have 2 F2 Butyagrus and one of them produces viable seed.

I have a good size (BxJ) x (BxS), so Butiagrus also can be used to pollinate other plants.
