Rooting Chamaedorea stolonifera

Recommended Posts

Hi,

got a stolon from this Chamaedorea with only a very little  root. After searching this forum I knew it's not easy to be rooted. After poting the stolon I wrapped the pot with palm into a big plastic bag, closed it and set this onto a heating mat. Before closing the plastic bag I mad a small black marking on the new coming leaf to see what happens. The new leaf has now grown 5 mm in 5 weeks.  I open the bag daily to ensure that the plant gets fresh air.

Does anybody know how long it will take to root this stolon? When can I be sure that the palm can be taken out of the bag and will continue growing?

Thanks for your help

Eckhard

Hi Pal,

attached two pictures. First whole stolon, second growth difference.

Hope it helps.

Hi Pal,

thanks for your reply. So I will give it some more weeks to see if the new leaf is opening. I think at this stage the stolen should have grown some new roots.

Hopefully this time i will be successful.

Eckhard, I think that the only way to really know will be to uncover the root at some stage to see for yourself.

I have taken and grown cuttings from Nepenthes for a few years now and I find that root development on different cuttings in the same conditions varies tremendously.

I also put them in plastic bags. In the case of Nepenthes,  'airing' is of no apparent importance, in my experience, although I did it sometimes just to feel better.

With leaves as big as your ones, I would keep that bag on them for a couple of months. In the cases of my cuttings that were slow to develop roots they were in the bags for about 6 months or until the roots were significant. Faster growth of new leaves did always indicate more root development as you would expect.

Cheers Steve

It is not dead, it is just senescence.

Hi Steve,

thanks for your reply. For sure it will stay inside the bag for some more month. I'll think I'll wait until a new leaf is open and new growth is really visible.

Hope it will do fine within that time.

First trial was not successful.
