Here's an odd pair of crownshafted palms I spotted in Lake Mary.  I couldn't ID them, and was thinking "Foxy Lady" Wodyetia x Veitchia, but the leaves aren't wide enough.  Maybe just Veitchia Arecina or young Royals?  I don't know that these will survive long-term, but they are in a "slightly protected" area for cold winds from the NW.  Any idea what they are?

Here is the infamous Cocos nucifera growing on I-Drive in front of Charley's Steakhouse.From looking at streetview, it was planted in 2008!

 

 

There is also a nice Hyophorbe lagenicaulis and H. verschaffeltii at this restaurant, looks like they were planted around 2014.

I took a pic of these palms 2 weeks after the Jan 2018 freeze.  I remember noticing they recovered quickly as did most royals in the area.  But look at the growth of trunk height in just 3.5 years!

Last week I was out at the FNGLA Landscape Show at the Orange County Convention Center. This years show was held in the newer building across from the original.  They have planted Roystonea regia at the 2 entrances off of International Drive. Here is one of the entrances;

 

 

Here are the Royal Palms at the other entrance. One has very short, more rigid fronds.

 

 

They look amazing Eric.  The cities and businesses need to start planting large royals in the Orlando area in place of these various Phoenix and Washingtonia.  They will get some cosmetic damage every few years (and this will vary a lot depending on where in the heat island a particular palm is located) but large healthy specimens should last many years in the Orlando area and down toward the Disney area and up toward Maitland and Winter Park.  

The two royals I planted in March of 2003 at my parents old house are now 50 foot giants and have weathered 5-10 freezes and 3 low temperatures to 24F and have survived and look as good as any royals in South Florida at this point.

Barring a 1989 freeze, they should be hardy in the warmer metro area. There were Royals around before the first big freeze in '83.

I see more being planted around, especially in Winter Park. I think they are catching on. And now that some got planted downtown across from City Hall at the DPPAC they will get more exposure.

 

Heres a couple houses  a few blocks down from Leu Gardens in the neighborhood behind Palmer's Garden Center.

First house has 2 Cocos nucifera growing well.

 

 

Another house with a Dypsis leptocheilos flanked by 2 Kentiopsis oliviformis. There are also Archontophoenix cunninghamiana in the background. Second photo is a Ficus altissima 'Variegata' reaching nearly 30ft, photo is from Palmer's parking lot.

I agree, more royals need to be planted! I just planted my first two this year from 7gals, in the openings of my oak sheltered yard in Longwood, 20 mins north of orlando.  I also have about two dozen seedlings I’ll be sharing with friends and neighbors in the upcoming years to spread around the areas.

Thanks for sharing, Eric.  One of my favorite things about conferences at the OCCC was walking around the I-drive area and seeing all of the cool palms and landscaping.

Back to the OCCC, lots of maturing Dypsis lutescens, some are seeding.

 

Some Adonidia and Ravenala madagascariensis. Although it is not zone 10, it is nice to see Cyathea cooperi used in a commercial landscape.

Wodyetia and Bismarckia. Out front there are 2 extremes of Bismarckia; one robust, massive specimen and one small scale specimen.

Here is one of the Royal Palms at the entrance to the OCCC, it has a dedication plaque.

 

 

I stayed across the street at the Rosen Center, heres some palms at the hotel.

Caryota mitis, Dypsis lutescens, Bismarckia and 2 really nice clumps of Phoenix reclinata. They have really skinny trunks, look more like "true" P. reclinata.

 

I walked over to the original section of the OCCC. They have really planted a lot of tropical plants around there in the last 10 years or so. This building has landscape up to the building and a lot of protected corners and cutouts. They have taken advantage of these little microclimates.

I’d come across this yard and posted a pic of these somewhere around last spring. Glad to see they’ve done well all summer!

I've been watching it for a few years, its good to see other palms planted. The house with the 2 coconut palms is just a couple blocks away.

One more set of photos from International Drive, this is at the Icon Park where the big Orlando Wheel thing is. Besides the common Wodyetia and Bismarckia, a few other interesting palms, Carpentaria and Ptychosperma macarthurii.

Some overpruned Phoenix rupicola and Ravenala madagascariensis.

Disney must have some behind the scenes stuff going on for these palms 

I really doubt Disney had anything to do with these palms, they are many miles from Disney property.

Love those bottles. Do people clean the trunks or does that happen naturally? Mine has almost 2 feet of trunk but very few have fallen off. 

clean the trunk and you will be surprised how gorgeous it is!

I spotted a nice Coconut growing in my mom's neighborhood just west of downtown Orlando near Rock Lake.

Someone has recently planted a bunch of mature Coconuts in downtown Orlando at Central and Paramore. The building is being rehabbed, not sure what is going on there.
