Can You Soak Palm Seeds In Salt Water To Kill Harmful Pathogens, Etc?

Featured Replies

Does anyone know of or ever soak palm seeds in salt water for a little bit and then rise them off very well with clean water before sowing them to get rid of harmful pathogens etc? Does anyone know if this will work, or will it harm the seed?

Salt water, not sure.  From the responses that I've read concerning seed sowing on here, it appears the bulk of the users perform a "disinfectant routine" consisting of some or all of the following:

  • Drench in a contact insecticide (especially sabal seeds)
  • Rub down with a dilute bleach solution (to reduce mold?)
  • Exposure to a fungicide before sowing

I'm sure I have missed some potential steps.  Some have used salt water for coconuts, but I'm not sure how much salt water would help with the wide variety of microbes and bugs palm seeds can attract.
