How long can you keep a palm in a pot?

I have had this Verschaffeltia splendida in a pot for a very long time, actually have 2 but this is the older of the 2. Was wondering what should I do to extend it's life in a pot? Was actually thinking to put them in the ground and get some new small ones this spring but I know sooner or later the cold will  kill them, but living in a pot forever probably will too.

How long? That depends on the species and the height of your ceiling. Here two examples of 45 and 28 years and one of unknwn age:
