Max of 16.6C / 62F here on Thursday afternoon. Despite the somewhat cool and wet weather in recent weeks, there are wildfires ongoing here still. Not exactly small ones either. 10+ separate fire crews were battling the Marsden fire that raged out of control on Thursday evening. They seem to be using drones to fight the UK fires now.

 

Cold front hitting now as I type this. Temperatures are forecasted to be well below average by about 5-10C / 10-20F over the coming days,  Sums up spring as a whole this year. Relatively cool and below average. A lack of abundant, significant rainfall is the main driving issue with the fires however. Very light, persistent rainfall will do next to nothing for the water table, which is still relatively low across the board. The summer wildfire season is still well ahead of us. The next few months will be touch and go.

After some weeks of nice spring weather and relatively warm temperatures around 20°C (just below and above - high of 23) ☀️, we're probably facing a cold snap for the next few days. With temperatures just around 11°C plus wind. 🥶 But rewarming on thursday with 18°C. 🌴☀️ Today's high was 14.0°C. Humid and partially cloudy.

Min temperature of 47f/8.3c last night and the high today was 60f/15.5c. It was cool and cloudy all today however there was around an hour and a half of sun around 1 which warmed the temperature up before it went back to raining. The weather looks terrible for the next 2 days. The weather has been well below average for March and April.

The only place in drought is the Devon/Cornwall which is ridiculous as they have had above average rain since autumn however water levels are now above normal everywhere else thanks too the wet spring

Also East Anglia. Despite the BBC's strange forecast which is way lower than the met office's and the gfs models temperature wise and rainfall wise, it looks like it will be drier next week.  Though this could definitely change considering how unstable the jetstream currently is.

A seasonally toasty 95 as we round the last corner of the month..  Hot for the weekend ahead, then another round on the temperature roller coaster as we start May.. 



Similar story for many parts of California as the new month begins, w/ the added inclusion of a little May rain / Snow possible.. Despite what some might assume, Rain / snow in May, in California Is NOT  unheard of..



On the other side of the globe, shattering records..  Heatwave in S. Europe is an interesting contrast to some unseasonably chilly temps. occurring in Central Europe atm.

This spring has been crap here. And I mean really crap. A max of 12C / 54F here today and pissing down with rain all afternoon/evening. This is now the latest 20C / 68F for England since 1983, so 40 years ago. We may reach 19-20C tomorrow, finally. There does appear to be a flip to warmer conditions now, but still nothing overly warm. We should have had a run like this a few weeks back. The lack of daytime warmth has really been apparent this spring. The highest for England so far this year is like 18C / 64F, I believe. That is abysmal up to now...

 

Warmer air is pushing in now as it is 12C / 54F at 2am currently, which was the max over the past two days. Hopefully that reaches 20C / 68F tomorrow. Springtime recovery has been really poor for the exotics this year, especially as it has followed such a bad winter as well. I have had several more spear pulls here now. It has been a really poor 4-5 months.

@UK_PalmsI'm not sure what the official high for the year is, but at least London's urban heat island it has been warmer than that. I recorded just under 20c on my Davis weather station, which isn't near to anything that would increase the temperature readings, on the 17th and quite a few weather stations recorded higher temperatures in London. This spring has definitely been poor though. Gfs is showing better temperatures than the forecast currently is. 24c with 14c lows, I can only hope that happens after the crap weather we have had so far this year.

I’m happy to report that today we got to 88F/31C with clear skies and abundant sunshine. What was most surprising was that when I got up this morning it was already 69F/20.5C.

Luckily the cold spell predicted for the mid of this week didn't occur. 🤷‍♂️ Well it did but not as severe. The only really cold day was Wednesday with a high of only 13.3°C. 🥶 After that it went back up and Friday felt warmer than it was with a gloomy ⛈️ 23.6°C. In general quite cool for the end of April though. Even though we had temperatures lingering around 20°C for weeks now, April has been unseasonably cold and gloomy according to an arctile I read today. It's been the coolest since 30 years and the wettest since 15 years. This has been more felt in the East though. Sitting in the West at least some good and warm weather came up from the South West through France. The forecast is predicting slightly warmer temperatures and a constant dry season. 🌴 I'm wondering when we will get our first real warmth/heat. 🧐☀️

Thicker area of high clouds moving northeast from the south should put the breaks on the heat for the rest of the afternoon here. We'll see if they hang around long enough for Sunset.


Roller Coaster ride continues as we start May tomorrow..  Looking a little further out, some of the GFS runs the last couple days have been suggesting maybe a mid- spring " taste of the Monsoon "- esque shower/ storm activity for parts of AZ sometime  after next weekend, while other runs keep things dry, esp. outside the mountains north / east of Phoenix ...Heat will back off again too.. Regardless,



Storm ...which may -eventually- entice some moisture northwest from Mexico, into AZ / N.M. later on  will definitely put an end to the "taste of summer heat" most of the state has seen the last few days.. Because of the time of year / nature of the Upper level low expected to hang around the state this week,  some areas could see legit, warm season Thunderstorm activity,  and some snow for the Sierras ( Accumulation(s) are not expected to be heavy though )

Another storm may bring a few more showers for parts of the state later, if it moves closer to CA as it passes.

All 'n All ..a fairly typical, mid spring forecast as we head toward the start of Summer.

This spring has been utter crap. Unlike recent years when the springs have been ridiculously dry here, this one has been the 2nd wettest March-April period on record. The previous 5 April’s have averaged 4mm of rain compared to a whopping 76mm this April. It was also very close to being the wettest March-April period on record. Consequently it has also been extremely cloudy/dull too. It is also the 2nd coolest March-April period on record with only 1983 having a lower max temp at this point. So overall it has been atrocious.

Despite all the rain and cool temps the fires are still going. They are nowhere near as bad as this time last year however. For the most part, this spring hasn’t been too bad for the fires. That will no doubt change in the summer though when it gets much drier and hotter.

Winter is over of course but we had a pretty strong radiational cooling night here in Florida.  I was 60 this morning between the low 70s reading at the coast and a 51 at the airport inland.  The dropoff is quick past the water and coastal strip.

Min this morning was 8c. The max today was 71f/21.6c with 45% humidity. The weather was full sun this morning and it sun and clouds this afternoon. The queen palm has significantly sped up in the last week. Sabals are also putting out a good amount of growth. The max UV was a 6. The bananas and cannas have been liking the weather pushing out multiple leaves per week. The forecast looks pretty average temperature wise for the start of May, hopefully it warms up by the end of May though.

The last couple of days have been splendid. Yesterday we got our first real summer vibe day with a high of 27.2°C in my garden. Most stations measured about the same, some even 30°C. Probably because of heat radiation. It's been sunny all day long ☀️ and I spent my day at the Cologne Zoo. They have some nice landscaping there but few palms. Yet nice specimens and not overpruned. It's been a warm night with 20°C even after midnight and a mild 18°C today early in the morning. Today's high's been 24.0°C interrupted by a few thunderstorms ⛈️ and cool off. Forecast looks warm but loaded with thunderstorms. 🌴

What might be the nicest Saturday Cinco De Mayo  around the area / lower deserts one can ask for..  Lows overnight in the mid / upper 50s / lowest 60s makes for perfect sleeping weather, followed by an afternoon which may -or may not- reach past the lower 80s. A little warmer as we end the weekend / start a new week, then another subtle cool down, ..before warming up again.  Lows stay in the perfect sleeping / awakening to range the whole time.



Just beyond next weekend, Keeping an eye on the forecasts since model runs continue to advertise the possibility of a cut off upper level low possibly forming somewhere over the Great Basin, then cutting southwest toward the offshore waters of northern Baja..  IF this scenario evolves / plays out as it has looked on the model runs, the low's position as it backs off the coast southwest of AZ could pull some moisture west / northwest out of eastern/ central Mexico into AZ, possibly parts of CA and the Great Basin offering up a " taste of the monsoon " in the form of widely scattered, convective showers / quick mountain storms which could wander out of the mountains into the valleys on one or two days.

Any rain that might occur would be light here, heavier in the hills -depending on storm activity of course. Still, we're about a month out from the " official"  start of the best season in the Southwest, ...so i don't anticipate any legit Monsoon-like activity.. just a tease..

Then again, you never know. something more than a quick , light shower and a breeze has occurred in May in recent years, so.. We'll see how this plays out  -if it does at all.   Heat will be back around the same time too, so any cloud candy / possible showers will be welcome.

Fairly quiet out there right now, but Just about time to start watching the East Pacific too.. Official start to our  Hurricane season is just 10 days away.. 

Have a feeling this is gonna be a very interesting year.. Hopefully, it is a loonng 6 months of reliably wet and stormy,  ...instead of dust covered white hot and thirsty..

Min 56f/13c last night. The high today was 72f/22.c. It probably would have been higher but there were a few light rainy intervals in-between the mostly sunny day due to thunderstorms. I could heard thunderstorms in the distance most of this afternoon, however it was sunny here other than the odd patches of light rain that cooled the temperatures down. The max UV was a 7. Mainland northern Europe seems to be getting a good amount of heat, whilst we have those winds, but mixing with winds coming off the Atlantic cooling the temperatures down. A few wunderground stations in south west London were showing 73,74f since they must of just missed one of the patches of rain. A cool rainy 17c is forecasted for the coronation tomorrow however Sundays high is forecasted at a much better 22c.

The days since the last post have been pretty pleasant with dry and sunny weather till afternoon which then followed by thunderstorms and gloomy evenings. ☀️⛈️  A lot of rain comes down then! But the evening clouds make the nights very mild which is nice. Highs always around 24/25°C like today with a high of 25.5°C. Currently almost 18°C at 9 p.m.. Sun just went down at our latitude.
