Hi Guys,

Just curious on a good fertilizer for my browning king palms that have been in the ground 4 years in very hot Southern California weather and if it's okay to fertilize now in August.

I am thinking of Milorganite AND  Vigoro for palms.

Thank you!

I would highly recommend Palm Gain which you can order through Home Depot.

it is fantastic and can be applied every 8 weeks if desired.

‘I start feeding in March and continue through November.

good luck!

I would add that you really can't overwater king palms in the summer, so I would really give them a lot of water with the heat you've been having lately.  They seem to really want a lot of water when it gets hot in Southern California.

Sounds like 2 votes for Palm Gain so I will purchase that.

Vigoro is always in stock at Home Depot not Palm Gain, yet Palm Gain is better ...

Thanks for the replies!

Make it three votes for Palm Gain, I use it and it works very well.

I used to employ Palmgain.  However I noticed it does not contain boron. Vigoro does. I started with Vigoro early this year. Not that Cocos nucifera are known to be huge boron fans being they most grow in sand and saltwater... However I do have several Beccariophoenix species, bottle palms, R. Hildebrantii, d. plumosa and they love Vigoro. But yes, unlike Palmgain, Vigoro is full strength stuff and if you apply too much it will burn some leaves off...

Come the end of the month I will post some pics for the two year anniversary of my cocos in the ground.  The only word which comes to mind to describe their status is "incredible".

PalmGain has Boron.

The difference between PalmGain and Vigoro is the quality of the source of ingredients. Vigoro uses potassium chloride where PalmGain uses potassium sulfate. Another thing that should stand out is that nothing is chelated in Vigoro. The 2:1:2 ratio is not ideal either IMHO and not enough Mg. 1 verses 4 in PalmGain.

The reality is that with either your going to see results. But with PG, over time, you will have healthier palms.

Thank you for the information. I must have had the name mixed up with another big box store brand.: miracle grow palm food.

I will have my oalms sample palm gain next year.

I apologize for the mixup and disinformation.

I may have caused some burn with the Vigoro by using more than needed and maybe a little close to the trunk. But I only apply about 3 times a year and if I were to guess the browning of the king palm leaves from the 4 year old palms is not enough water here in hot San Diego, California - inland not coastal.

I recently picked up a yard of organic compost to help with the clay soil I have. I have many trees but 2 king palms and both are producing new fronds although like I said the old ones brown quickly. That said they are towards the bottom of my hill so water runs away from drip line unlike planting on level ground. I have them in the same area but one is so much bigger and greener.

I ordered palm gain at Home Depot.

Appreciate the good suggestions!

Alex, perhaps you were referring to Carl Pool Palm Fertilizer, which doesn't contain Boron. I made the same mistake and ended up with several palms with Boron deficiency after a few days of constant rain. I switched to Palm Gain and haven't noticed any Boron deficiency since then, just green and healthy palms.

Here are the 2 King Palms I'm trying very hard to water so they brown less.

Yes. I got the labels mixed up.

Two 10lbs bags of PalmGain just arrived. Going to apply some on the planted palms. (Cocos, dypsis, one alfredii and one dying(sun scorched, now-leafless) B.fenestralis.  I used up the remainder of last of the bag of Vigoro I had on all the potted ones day before last.

Here's hoping!

Done. However ever I must admit.  PALMGAIN stinks(odor-wise).  Especially in our 93F heat.

Since all my planted palms are in pure coarse sand, fertilizer is necessary. Let's see how PalmGain fares during this mid growing season. (In our neck of the woods, we have till mid November).

Also, my apologies to everyone for the mishap. I "armchaired" pontificated on a fertilizer label I erroneously pointed out. Btw, Palmgain  has .05% more boron than Vigorous does.

Here again, Mea culpa.

All that suffer smells for sure. After a few waterings, it will go away.

Dont use too much on your potted palms. This is not a control-release fertilizer, so it can burn your palms if you use too much.

Danke! Yes, for my potted palms I employed the remaining portion of Vigoro fertilizer. (Still have about 4-5 cups left). I also followed the instructions on the Palmgain bag for my planted palms.
