Saddened to hear that. That palm was a natural work of art.

I would love to see it recreated as a bronze statue and placed there permanently.

Old age may play a big part. I think the article said it was 80-100 years old.

There is a smaller version in Altamonte Springs where I live. I took this photo about 15 years ago. It was planted in a new gated right inside the gate. I need to go check it out and get an updated photo.

In my opinion, the city jumped the gun on the removal. Yeah it lost a head, but it didn't look dead to me from the photo; if this palm merited such appreciation and notoriety, they should have let it live out its days-100 years means nothing to me for the age of a Butia, in the panhandle-I see no reason why they can't reach 200 years.

If there were complaints about how it looked, then I guess it gets a bit obfuscated on the direction forward, as a municipality. I personally believe this palm had more life, and could have been given better care...

Agree. That palm was famous and the city should have invested some funds hiring a palm expert to evaluate it and make recommendations.

The local paper near Panama City had a picture of it shortly before they were to cut it, and it unfortunately was pretty clear it was in a irreversible decline. As hard as it is, I think it was a correct assessment.
