Yup, two great gardens, great weather & a lot of people. That bottle palm was ridiculous. Some of Peter's stuff is so big & mature, I didn't even recognize what it was. Like the two story high Pinanga coronata..

Tremendous bottle palm in that first picture!

And that is in La Jolla? That proves without a doubt tropicals can grow well in SoCal. What I find most remarkable is that is location is on the coast and not inland. It's usually 10-15f cooler in the Socal coast compared to 10-20 mIles inland.

Congrats on the meeting!

Thank you for sharing the pictures.

Eta:

This is our weather right now (11:53am Monday 23rd July).

Compare that to La Jolla or anywhere in the coast.

It's amazing what 12-20 miles inland does. (Up to a certain point. Altitude, etc)

Even a hyophorbe as mature as that one is, looks spectacular!!! You know they usually lose the bottle appearance upon reaching maturity.  The leaves possibly offsets the figure of its trunk. All in all, another beautiful uber-tropical  in coastal Socal.

I get sucked into the details a lot... so there's a Pritchardia, but it's nature's architectural feat to creat that perfect umbrella curve with the delicate tomentum detailing -- wow!DSC_5410.thumb.jpg.8971ada128ca98bcece93DSC_5413.thumb.jpg.d2253149695deed08e129

And nature goes crazy with Passion Flowers... first the flowers, then the fruit...  Mark uses this as a screen at the very back of the garden in such a way that you wonder if there is more to see around the bend.

Thank you, Dave, for donating the Bauhinia galpinii.  I was so pleased to win 2 of them in the raffle.  I can now take them off my plant "bucket list " and they will have a special place in my garden.

Aside from plants in the 2 great gardens, kudos to the potluck gourmets who brought the awesome chile verde meat stew and the home made potato salad.
