The Aristolochia arborea specimen at Leu Gardens is flowering. This species is unusual as it grows as a large shrub or small tree while most Aristolochia grow as vines. The flowers are borne at the base of the trunk and seem to mimic certain fungi in its native habitat (rainforests from southern Mexico to El Salvador). This specimen was planted out in May 2003 and has grown to about 6ft tall.
