After Townsville we drove up the road a bit, thru the town of Tully, the wettest town in Oz and into the Mission Beach area to look at Licuala's at the Licuala State Forest. We stayed at a caravan park at South Mission Beach and even the palms in the caravan park were spectacular.

Most of the cabins had a foxtail and a redneck next to them. I wonder how Larry treated all these palms in the caravan park. Being right on the beach they would have taken the full force of the cyclone.

What a nice pandan.

Since these photos were taken in Oct 05, Cyclone Larry went thru in March 06. I don't know how much damage has been done to the forest. Does anyone know how it all faired in the end? I'll be back there in the beginning of August so I'll be able to take more pics and compare.

Hope all enjoy this little journey. I thoroughly recommend a visit to the Mission Beach area if you can do it. It's unforgettable.

Very nice Tyrone! You didn't let us down! I thoroughly enjoyed that short but very rich trip amongst two of my favorite genus palms. The Licuala canopy looks surreal and that H. wendlandiana is out of this world. I'm receiving seeds from that species today and I'm very glad!

More Licuala forest shots. It may be a bit repetitive, but I never get sick of looking at Licuala's and Calamus in habitat, especially in this sort of concentration. I hope others feel the same. I could look at forest shots of Licuala's all day and not get bored.

This area is actually a swamp forest, but these photo's were taken in the middle of the dry. When it's wet it's WET. I've found that Hydriastele wendlandianna actually seems to grow quite quickly if it's kept moist and soaking wet in the heat of summer. I'd imagine this forest would be almost knee deep in water after a seriously heavy period of rain. My Hydriastele has actually experienced a low of 8C but if I water it a lot it keeps growing. I'm totally surprised that a palm that is quite tropical will take these sort of low temps and still respond strongly to watering. If I don't water it, it literally doesn't move at all. I know all this because I've been marking the spear and watching what it responds too. I can have a night of 10-12C and have it grow about 1cm of spear overnight, but only if I water it that afternoon. Hydriastele literally means water nymph in Latin and it's quite appropriate.

Tyrone , there was a fair bit of damage from Larry , many large trees and palms got blown over . I drove past the caravan park at Wongalinga this afternoon on the way home from work and there seems to tons of palms still there ..was that the one you stayed at ? I know one of the cleaners there so will ask if I can have a wander around , some fantastic palms there .

We stayed at the one on South Mission Beach. It's on the bend just as you get to the beach, and if you're heading towards the beach it's on your left. Don't know if it's the same one. Hopefully there wasn't too much damage, but that's a big ask after something like Larry rolls through town.

Such a beautiful place. I cannot imagine what it looks like now after the cyclone, hopefully not as bad as I'm picturing it in my head.
