Sabal palmetto and Washingtonia make the best carving material for tikis. Other palms have too much water so they rot quickly.

Just getting back into carving after a bit of a break. With Hurricane Irma last September, logs have been plentiful.

I only use a chain saw. Nothing more. Following the carve, a blow torch creates an aged effect. Sealed properly in urethane, I have some over 10 years old in the garden.

Queens are way too soft. Kings are soft and too small in diameter to carve a good tiki.

Hi Rick, do you find some trunks with root ball, turn upside down and carve?  Roots make nice hairdoo.  Great job on the carvings.
