Clay can have a varied range of ph. Limestone substrate has proven a happy medium for Satakentia.

limestone and coral rock are all alkaline substrates.  Clay as Andrew says can be acidic or alkaline depending on mineral content.  I can say the satakentia Ive seen in limestone rock soil in miami area were spectacular.  http://www.fairchildgarden.org/home-gardening/gardening-how-tos/soils-media

Formerly in Gilbert AZ, zone 9a/9b. Now in Palmetto, Florida Zone 9b/10a??

Clay and limestone rock soils have very different drainage characteristics. I don't think that Satakentia would be at all happy in clay.
