As I walked past a few colorful Pinangas a little while ago, it occurred to me how easily entertained we palm enthusiasts are: just give us some color - a new red frond, or a colorful crownshaft - every now and then, and we're tickled pink. Makes no difference if the same palm produces one red frond after another (which, hopefully, it will!), we're just as thrilled every single time, as if each time happened to be the very first time. Talk about cheap thrills! An investment of $10-15 or so (for a 1 gallon palm) can create immense satisfaction for many years. That's pretty incredible!

Here are a few shots from our garden, all taken this afternoon.

First, a happy, and very intimate, group of Pinanga insignis!

Thanks guys! And Steve, funny you mention green, since most of the time we don't even think of green as a color....! Let's face it, we want red, or blue, or orange! Green is unfortunately a little bit too boring.

I took a few more photos after the ones above. This one isn't quite as intense since it's not a close-up, but I just enjoy seeing these three Dypsis 'Orange crush' side by side. They lost their old fronds last week, so the color is not quite as intense today as it was then.

And the old reliable Areca vestiaria. These two are the standard orange variety.

Colours! We got some unexpected late rains which fostered some really big growth and all is shining. Yesterday at the palmetum I was surprised to see the colourful emerging inflorescences of Bismarckia nobilis, with bright red rachillae coming out of a mix of blue leaves and rusty scales. Caryota cumingii had also very colurful inflorescences. No camera though.

Beautiful plants and photos Bo.

On Carlo's behalf, I will add the pictures I took in Tenerife of the spactacular Red royals.  I know many of you have seen these before, but you can't see them too often.

Carlo said the colour wasn't as intense as it sometimes is, but I was quite happy.

Peter,

that was a somewhat unusual day!! I owe you a guided garden tour, and I hope next time both you and your wife will be able to make it! :)

Bo-Göran

Two more photos - first Basselinia gracilis. A species with lots of variability.

And rthink - that's a VERY colorful Latania!! And Corey (and Carlo) - those Roystoneas are definitely unique. I'm trying to visualize a street lined with them... Wow!!

Bo,

It is not a whole street, but we have four red royals in a row, planted in front of the main post office in Santa Cruz. Last month four more green roystoneas were planted close by and simmetrically. I foresee a great picture of 4 reds + 4 greens. Let them recover, they will look neat in a few months.

Corey, thank you for posting them.

Some wonderful colour there people!

Bo,

Fabulous colour- as always.

rthink,

That little Calyptrocalyx looks great!

I really need to try some of those. Calyptrocalyx is one I have never had a go with...hmmm

Matty,

that photo of Deans Licuala looks very unusual compared to most- they usually have more green. That fine example must only just make enough chlorophyll to keep it alive.

Carlo,

Have you collected any seed from the 'Red Royal' ? and are the seedlings the same colour?

Made the move to Mandurah - West Aust

Kamipalms,
Growing for the future
