How many people soak their seeds with a small amount of Hydrogen Peroxide in water? I never did it before so I am just now trying, but what do you soak your seeds In? The picture below are some date palm seeds, I soaked them the first day with just water, and for a few hours today they will be soaking with water and a tiny bit of hydrogen peroxide.

I've germinated a few hundred thousand seeds and never done this.

My intention for soaking was to try to get all the little peices of flesh off so it does not get all moldy when I germinate them. Also, in the middle of the seeds there is this white slimy string kind of thing, can I pull this off?

Let it dry out so that the "butt crack" of the seed expands and it falls right out. Peroxide isn't sterilizing anything.

Alright, thank you.

I usually use fresh seed, clean the flesh off, let them dry out for a day or so, and then just put them straight into gallon pots, with soil of course. I only soak overnight in water when I've let the clean seed set for a week or so. I’ve not used peroxocide or fungicide in the germination process. Now, a commercial grower surely has a more regimented process, but being  a home grower, I've got more seedlings than I know what to do with.

I found that if it is fresh seed then you generally won't have any problems with germination as long as the moisture and heat are right. With seed that is old, the mold vultures will inform you in a few weeks and there wasn't anything you could do about the oldness anyway.

The left over flesh will rot away on fresh seed but it seems to not hinder germination.

10-15% normal strength Chlorox x 15 minutes, followed by multiple rinses and 24 hr soak in tap water. Captan spray @ labeled concentration for questionable seed. Malathion soak @ labeled concentration overnight for insect damaged seed.

Not a recommendation, just personal protocol. Haven’t germinated 100s of thousands palm seed, but many thousands of rare/delicate/hard to germinate palm seeds treated as stated.

I haven't germinated anything that needed more than the "clean, soak, sow" method.  Even sabal gives me ~70% without treatment.  I sow for personal use primarily, and still end up with enough to give away in the end.

Dave, I have friends who own 40+ acre nursery's who germinate millions of seeds for the mass markets in a single year. I myself have around 100,000 seeds currently in community pots and seed trays in the green house. it ads up very quickly. For example a dypsis pembana seed tray will have around 800-1,000 seed in it alone, yada yada yada

I soak my palm seeds for about 2 to 3 days in glass of drinking water(i.e Not well water) change the water twice a day and on the 3 day i soak those seeds in mild solution of liquid bleach solution for 15 to 20 minutes and then wash them in drinking water. Then air dry those seeds in room temperature before putting them in ziploc bags. And rest,my climate takes care of.

If seeds are dispersed in garden soil in late winters(our rainy season)in early summer i have sprouts visible. But only problem is squirrels would attack that is the only reason why i do baggie method.

And here are some visuals of seeds sprouting withot any care or special treatment/pampering.And the seeds are from Dave from So-cal :

This is what they call military grade. If i were to read this few years back i would not have ventured into seeds germination at  all..So much work !

But anyway i praise your dedication to palms and their well being. As you don't want to take any chances with rare palm seeds.

I've soaked seeds in hydrogen peroxide mixed with RO water before. I don't do it for long, then I put them in straight RO water.

Lately I haven't been doing that. I usually just soak in RO water for 2-3 days.

Here are the same seeds in my first picture now, in perlite. I added water so the perlite is all moist and I put plastic wrap over the top with one large hole over the middle to hopefully prevent any mold. I shouldn't have to add any more water to them before they germinate.

This guy believes that H2O2 is best to keep fungus and mould away from germinating seeds, take a look at this video :

H2O2 _ Part 1

H2O2 _ Part 2

In future even i would try his method for palm seeds germination.Since it seems to be so simple.

Kris.

I use a Clorox dilute then maybe a fungicide bath. I only do this on seeds that are scare, expensive, or have given me mold problems in the past..
