For Mother's Day I took my Mom to San Diego. While we were there, we visited some places we used to vacation at in the late 60's - this pic taken of us at the Bahia in 1967:

Unlike the rest of the world, luckily Mission Bay has not been over built since. It remains pretty much the same except the hippies and head shops aren't as prevelent :D :

Okay but this is a palm forum and not a trip down memory lane so here's the palms I saw at the Bahia:

Did you get any better pics of the giant Jubeopsis Caffra in the front of the Catamaran?  (It would be behind the red car in the first pic on post 7)

Bill - I wish I could have gotten together for a PRA or just to hang out. We'll have to do something soon. Paul's off to Bali already?

By the time we got to the Catamaran, she was pretty well over the palm thing :(

Those are great pics, Scott. One of those 2 resorts also have a nice hyophorbe verschafeltii somewhere. I live in San Diego and STILL have not been to either of those 2 places. There is another resort in SD that is very similar to the Bahia and Catamaran called Paradise Point. beautiful palms, plants, mangos and bananas there as well.

Thanks for the pics Scott! I really nice palms growing there. Although not a palm, I really liked the big BOP. Those look great when they get trunks like that. Loved the Pritchardia too, what type is it?

Kris - Just can't see a CIDP without thinking of you. They are majestic, aren't they?

John, David and Wal (If you ever come to California) These resorts are worth a visit. Perhaps the Catamaran mostly. The  Bahia is my favorite mainly because of times past. The Palm area there isn't right out in front. You have to go down a drive in the resort - the suddenly there it is. It was a surprise to me.

(The Bahia used to have quite a large place for nightly entertainment, restaurants, lounges, bars - most famously the Mercedes Room with royal blue and silver mercedes carpeting, and it was quite a hopping place. All that is gone now, and it's a sedate little building that one would never guess it's past :( )

Paul - when do you return? It'd be great to plan a PRA (one royalty check) when you get back :D.

ruskinPalms - What's a BOP? I thought of the Big Bopper? The Pritchardia is beautiful, unfortunately I'm still in training so I can't tell what kind it is.

Thanks Scott for the nice pictures of Mission Bay, SD and the Catamaran hotel.

Last year, when visiting Southern California with my family we were lucky to stop by the Catamaran for a couple hours at the time they were having a palm Society meeting. We were staying with some friends in La Jolla and had many other places to visit so we couldn't stay longer...We did a tour around the gardens, met Phil from Jungle Music coming out of a reunion and then I saw this guy standing near a Howea at the concierge and decided to surprise him a little bit:

Last one... I guess it's in Del Mar.

I found San Diego coastal area very nice and quiet. I was expecting something like Miami beach or Cannes, in France, much busier and crowded. I'd love to come back sometime for a more detailed visit...

Hi Scott..

Wow those are some great shots of the Bahia @ Catamarn.  To bad we missed ya, and the 'P.R.A."

By chance did you get around to  the back side of the

Catamaran, theres an amazing Sabal mauritiiformis there in the shade.  When I first saw it I just had to run out and get one. :P

more palms, less bombs!

Especially to Scott and Gileno - thanks for posting the nice pictures at the Catamaran and Bahia in beautiful San Diego.  San Diego was a part of my life for many years and if for some reason I had to move to the Mainland, it would certainly be one of my first choices.

Hawaii Island (Big Island), leeward coast, 19 degrees N. latitude, south Kona mauka at approx. 380m (1,250 ft.) and about 1.6 km (1-mile) upslope from ocean.

No record of a hurricane passing over this island (yet!).

Summer maximum rainfall - variable averaging 900-1150mm (35-45") - Perfect drainage on black volcanic rocky soil.

Nice sunsets!
