2 Chinese Fan Palms.  Check out the palm on the left.  It is carrying more fronds than I could even count.

I started to take a picture of the big Royal in the background but I moved my camera to capture all the different colors.

Most of the Royals around here have flat looking leaves and are not very plumose like the ones I was used to in Florida.  I assume these are oleraceas?

This Royal is at least 60 feet tall and is growing from the bottom of the hillside.  The hill is so steep that you can only see

the crown of the palm from the road.  That's the Pacific in the background.

Some more of the same palms from the Quepos post.  I assume these are D madagascariensis.  They do not seem to grow very well here although these look better than the ones in town.

Hi Jeff,

Nice photos.

The palm in post 18 seems like a Bactris gasipaes and the one in post 19 looks like Attalea butyracea.

I liked the Licuala photo.

Thanks Luis!!  I was thinking that 18 was the peach palm but I wasn't sure.  Thanks for the ID on the Attalea too.

Awesome pics Jeff! Normally I'm not a big fan of the fan palms but that Pritchardia is gorgeous! What sp. is that? If they would grow here, I may consider picking one up for the next house. Besides the lust I felt for the sealing wax palms, :P  the other plant that caught my eye was the orange tree in post # 7. Anyone know what it is?

By the way, let me know if your plans are still on for your June trip! Oh & post some other plant porn in the tropical plants board, I know you're holding out on all the heliconias etc! :D

Thanks Bren!  I'm not sure about the Pritchardia but I think it's P pacifica.  They don't grow very well in St Pete.  I have never seen a large one (that doesn't mean they don't exist) but there is one growing in the Old Northeast section which has been there for at least 5 years.  It gets pretty beat up looking in the winter and then recovers by the end of the summer and it has not grown much.  I've been told that P hillabrandii is a better substitute for P pacifica in Central Florida.  There is even a "blue" form.  Check out the link to PACSOA

http://www.pacsoa.org.au/palms/Pritchardia/hillebrandii.html

I'm pretty sure the tree in post 7 is the Royal Ponciana tree in bloom.  I'll try and post some pics on the tropical board but it takes at least 15 minutes to download each picture - and I have high speed wireless here!!!  Some night when I have a few hours to kill, I'll post some.  And you're right!  I do have lots of heliconia, ginger and other plant pics.

Awesome pics Jeff.  I imagine there are only a few palms that you cant grow there, and can probably count them on one hand.  Thanks for sharing

Hola again Jeff,

Even though this is a palm board, how about a closeup of a few crotons?
