Hey everyone, I planted this as a 7 gallon about a year ago and it has done great, but I'd like some feedback on whether or not I planted it too close to my house. lol

Just to explain, I'm in a marginal climate for this palm so I planted it as close to the house as I could for protection. The trunk seems to be about 18" from the wall, and the eve comes out approximately 12.5". I initially thought it was an acceptable distance, but thinking more I'm not entirely sure. Also, I'm a little concerned this could eventually be a problem with homeowners insurance. It goes without saying that I'd rather not move it, but if I do I better do it before it gets any bigger.

Your feedback is appreciated! :)

I personally think it will be fine but don't know about the insurance. I see people in my area plant Ravenea rivularis real close to their houses and seem to have no problem not to mention from what I've seen those have fatter trunks.

While I am not in the insurance business, I think you should be good to go.

I realize your are not in Hawaii, but this might give you an idea of it's potential. See the shovel at the base of the palm.

These are not small palms and you might be having frond drop on your roof, as well as your neighbor's.

Not to mention during a hurricane if it it higher than your roof the trunk will bang against the roof a lot.

Thanks everyone. I think I'll keep it where it is for now. That point about a hurricane is a little concerning and something I never considered, but I guess I'll just hope for the best. Worst case scenario is it causes a few hundred dollars in damage which seems like an acceptable risk.

Just out of curiosity, which direction does that side of your house face and how much sun does it get?  I have a few I need to plant but I'm probably even a cooler 9b than you. Thanks.

That's the east wall and it gets a lot of sun.

I'll be interested to know how they do for you. So far it has been a fantastic palm for me, but it hasn't had to go through a freeze.
