I moved into my new place in Townsville back in late January and got started right away on the 1st of a few garden beds I will be putting in and thought I might start this thread to keep updated on my progress as it matures over the next few years.

I am only planting Australian Natives so so far palm wise in the ground I have:

Archontophoenix Alexandre

Carpenteria Acuminata

Licuala Ramsayi

Normanbya Normanbyi

Pychtosperma Elegans

Wodyetia Bifurcata

Cocos Nuciferos

Nothing too interesting or rare at this point but there are many more species which I have germinated which I hope reach a size I am happy to plant out in the near future.

Also, surrounding my property on 2 sides is native bushland in which their are a number of nice Livistona Decora you can see in the background of some of the images.

Nice Job Chris, will mature nicely.......... I live down the road near Airlie Beach. My garden has just been smashed by Tropical Cyclone 'Debbie'....... If you are after other native palms there are a few of us with access to different stuff but you can also go and see Larry at Anderson Gardens and obtain some seed from palms there.

Thanks @Tropicgardener. Sorry to hear about the cyclone at your place, we were pretty lucky up here that it tracked south as everything I have seen from down your way does not look good at the moment, I hope you have a speedy recovery.

I have had a bit of trouble finding many of the species I have been after but have managed to track down seeds for many of them one way or another and germinated many of them but that obviously means it will be years before they reach any level of maturity. It is a pain that no nurseries up here seem to grow anything other than the usual suspects, especially as we have so many species native to our own backyard.

I have been looking for Hydriastele Costata, H. wedlandiana, Oraniopsis Appendiculata, Acontophoenix Purpurea, Arenga Australasica and Laccospadix among others. if you know of anyone who sells a greater selection and might be able to help me out would you please be able to PM me their details.

thanka for sharing Chris

whats your land size ?

what is the rough price for a hose with 1000 sqm there ? It seems the prices are more reasonable there ...I'm thinking to buy a property over there to start a palm garden :)

@Mohsen my block is around 1200m2 and you are right, prices are very reasonable here with blocks of this size at around $200,000 and thats in a good location as well however if you want to buy land specifically to start a palm garden I would go literally anywhere else in North Queensland. Townsville is in the dry tropics and hardly gets any rainfall compared to it's neighbours just 100km to both our north and south and with that comes water restrictions, etc.. It is still obviously in the Tropics and therefor a good location for growing Palms as evidenced by some wonderful gardens up here such as the Palmetum however their are just more obstacles to overcome than other areas in Nth QLD.

All the best with your new garden. All those species should grow like bananas (Bananas would also would grow like bananas for you). Just had a look at the climate stats for Townsville and I can see that you'd need to irrigate there from April to Nov to get the wet tropics look. High winter temps and low rainfall create high evaporation levels and would dry everything out pretty quick. A bit like Perth from Nov to April. The almost constant blue sky would be nice though. A constant year round outdoor culture. If you created an efficient irrigation setup you'd have a very tropical and lush garden. :)

Millbrook, "Kinjarling" Noongar word meaning "Place of Rain", Rainbow Coast, Western Australia 35S. Warm temperate. Csb Koeppen Climate classification. Cool nights all year round.

Honestly, I'm not the best guy to ask, I'm from VIC and only been up here a few years. I can't speak much for price however from what I have seen everywhere up here is fairly reasonable compared to the rest of Australia. Airley, Mission Beach, Cairns or anywhere north of it would have great conditions for it.

Welcome to PalmTalk Chris.      I worked in Bushland Beach & Mt Low area a few years ago.   That's a good size block @ 1200m2, most of the homes on worked on had blocks half that size.     :greenthumb:
