HIPS Annual Dinner & Palm Auction

HIPS (Hawaii Island Palm Society) held their Annual BBQ Dinner and Palm Auction on Friday Feb. 3, 2017 in Hilo on the Big Island. It was well attended, the food was great, a musical group provided entertainment and a great variety of palms were auctioned off. The green list of palms were those in the 'Live' auction, shown on tables along the wall There was also a 'Silent' auction with many palms, most placed on tables as shown in the next photo. All in all a great event!

Hawaii Island (Big Island), leeward coast, 19 degrees N. latitude, south Kona mauka at approx. 380m (1,250 ft.) and about 1.6 km (1-mile) upslope from ocean.

No record of a hurricane passing over this island (yet!).

Summer maximum rainfall - variable averaging 900-1150mm (35-45") - Perfect drainage on black volcanic rocky soil.

Nice sunsets!

I was happy to get this one gallon size CALYPTROCALYX yamutumune in the 'Silent' auction. Anyone else growing this one?

Is the "Upset price" the amount needed to start bidding?

Zone 10a at best after 2007 AND 2013, on SW facing hill, 1 1/2 miles from coast in Oceanside, CA. 30-98 degrees, and 45-80deg. about 95% of the time.
