This Licuala spinosa is now about 15 yrs old and 2m tall. I am thinking of doing a little "cosmetic" pruning so that the trunks are visible.IMG_0172.thumb.JPG.bf9a4a890384811d75d8a

Syagrus cearensis, also called Twin Palm because it usually develops two trunks.

Just beautiful, Scott!  I love all of it.  All the palms look healthy and well-tended.  Thanks.

Thanks, it is a challenge to have a lush looking garden on the beach. Our dry season is brutal with no rain for four months. I am fortunate that I have ground water fairly close to the surface ( about 4m) and so when the palms hit that they really take off.I try to stick to Thrinax,Syagrus,Copernicia,Coccothrinax species. Any sun loving palm that develops a deep root system has a good chance at long term survival in this garden. I have a lot more interesting species in pots just waiting to be planted out at the beach.

Looks great, Scott!  I'm jealous.  What is your average annual rainfall there, and what variety of coconut palms are those that you have there?

Very nice!  What is the separation between the cocos?

5 year high 42.2C/108F (07/06/2018)--5 year low 4.6C/40.3F (1/19/2023)--Lowest recent/current winter: 4.6C/40.3F (1/19/2023)

John, most of my cocos are Yellow Dwarf and Green Dwarf. There are some Panama Tall and a few that are not identified. We get apocalyptic lighting at the beach so any palms that stick their heads above the rest get zapped.

We get about 100 inches of rainfall, but about 90% of that falls in just three months June-August.

Its about 4-5 meters. There are some doubles planted as well. I wanted to create a wind break to help reduce the fine salt spray.

Looks gorgeous, as always! :)  Show us the Licuala after the haircut, I'll be curious to see the difference.

Thanks Kim. I have trimmed another L.spinosa in my highland garden and it made a major impact. I think when they reach this size the multi-trunks are very architectural and add interest.

I am so pleased with the landscape lighting I did on the beach side that I am starting a new lighting project on the leeward side of my property. This will be a great candidate for lighting.

Scott,

Yellow and Green Malayan Dwarfs as well as Panama Talls are nice varieties.  I bet you get a lot of nuts from all of them.  That is a lot of rainfall, but it is a shame that the overwhelming majority of it comes in just 3 months.

John I have a total of 58 cocos so I do have lots of nuts, many many more than I can use. I have people that harvest the nuts and groom the palms in exchange.

Wow, Scott, it sounds like you have your own mini coconut plantation.  It must be nice there.

Photo update on my Syagrus cearensis. It’s been almost three years since the last photo.

It still has two trunks ( hence the common name Twin Palm) and has not produced viable seeds yet . The trunks are slightly under 2m now.

Looking great Scott! Rainfall........100” (2540mm) in three months, good grief! Our rain gauge registered 130” (3302mm) in 2019 , but that’s over 12 months. Can you say Monsoon?

Hey, where’s that photo of that L. Spinoza?

Remember that the Pacific waters of Guatemala are the breeding grounds for the hurricanes that move north often hitting Mexico and skirting the Hawaiian Islands. These low pressure systems often take weeks to form before they move north. Phenomenal amounts of rain can fall here during these events.

This is the Licuala spinosa. Trimmed and a few main trunks were edited by a falling tree branch. This area is also plagued by crabs that root prune everything while making their burrows.

I thought this Coccothrinax “azul” was photo worthy. It’s producing seeds for the first time!
