Taken a few days ago. Euterpe edulis w/ lots of candy apple red color at the base of the trunk. Looks great.

Love to see these colors and I had to show them off! :;):

These palms breezed through the freeze, w/ most showing no damage at all (these were under shade cloth)!

Very pretty. Where is the native habitat of this palm?

Reuven,

These are from South America, in countries like Brazil (south eastern), Ecuador, Argentina and Paraguay. Typically found in rain forrests.

Pretty fast grower as well and can get quite tall (at least in it's natural habitat) even w/ it's fairly thin trunk.

When young they prefer shade and being kept on the damp side.

Thanks for that info, Joe. I don't think that these are available in my locality, but the larger nurseries here might have them.

E. edulis is also failry cold hardy.  My shaded 6' tall specimen had "only" 25% defoliation from a 28F night in January 2003.

They can't however, handle being water logged. Hurricane Francis dumped over a foot of rain on us and the spot I had my original specimen (it had about 4-5 feet of trunk) was low enough, where the water sat there for 3 days and it killed the palm. That was one of my biggest disappointments from that hurricane. Live and learn. They are a beautiful palm. I quickly bought a replacement and put it in a much higher spot and so far, it is doing fine.

Rusty - I'm not sure on their variability. I will scan through my plants to see if maybe some aren't doing this. Might be the case.

Joe, thanks.....

I had gotten both E. edulis and oleracea from Floribunda back in 04, but suceeded in killing the Oly.....shoot. :(

But the edulis never looked back, an is a real strong grower. :)
