After leaving Eungella in the mountains we headed back to the coast down into the lowland elevations to Cape Hillsborough around Ball Bay to have a look at a big stand of Ptychosperma elegans. Here is the beach.

When we went out to the point where the Ptychosperma's were, we were expecting an area that was a lot wetter than it was. It was late October, hot and dry. It felt like 33-35C and very blue skies. We walked through an area that seemed too dry and about 50ft from the water. Along the way we came across this pandan which tended to indicate that some sort of freshwater was nearby at some point.

Does anyone know what species of Pandan this is?

Have a look at this spider. It was about 15cm across, but looks quite small in the photo.

Then another 100m along the track from the pandan, the path changed completely into a protected forest canopy area with loads of Ptychosperma's. So in just 200m from the carpark we went from a dry open area to a closed rainforest style canopy. It was still dry, but in the wet I'd imagine it would be nice and damp in here.

Interestingly when we were driving into this area along the inside of the mangrove zone near the road, there were baby Ptychosperma elegans coming up in what would be seasonally quite dry areas not far from the high tide mark. I'd imagine they were growing where freshwater would meet saltwater in the wet. I found this amazing.

To me it looks like some New Caledonian palm. Actually New Caledonia is literally only about a 1000km east of that palm.

On the way thru Bowen, a mango growing district we took this photo.

This was taken at about 70km/hr out of the window of the car, and my wife was trying to take a photo of the giant mango. But the shutter has a bit of delay on this digital camera and caught the foxtail in front of it. My wife was annoyed that we didn't go back and get a proper photo, but we needed to get to Townsville by a certain time. Anyway I think the photo is perfect. I call it "Foxtail framed by giant mango".  :)  Where else but Australia eh??

I promised my wife that when we go back this year, we'll actually stop and take a photo of the giant mango.  :)

TYrone , was the giant mango 'The Frosty Mango' ?

If so its really worth a stop , fantastic homemade icecreams and fruit salads. I have done the drive from up here down to Brisbane a few times , and if you stop at to many gardens it can take forever  :D

The Livistona may be drudei , sure looks like it .

Tyrone, the Livistona looks more like decora to me. Michael, most of the drudei I have seen have much more upright leaves...these appear to have a rounder crown with more pendant leaves. There are some nice stands between T'ville and Ingham that show this.

The A. tuckeri's look like really fast growers, probably thanks in part to the shade and their competing with each other.   I've got three little ones in the yard right now, and this summer they should start building trunks.   That stand makes me think I planted them, an A. cunninghamiana, and two Carpentaria at roughly the right spacing.  Now to find the right spot for another little cunninghamiana.  

It would be fun to measure the distance from Perth to Townsville, then do a North American comparison.  I suspect almost Seattle to Orlando.

Dave, Glad you like the A tuckeri's. I was quite excited to find them, as I wasn't going far enough north to see them in habitat. I think Townsville is about 4000-4500km in a straight line. It's a 4hr flight from Perth to Brissie and then 2 or 3 days by car to Townsville. A beautiful drive and many palms.

Larry, I'm jealous of the Queenslanders too, especially when there are so many coconuts and I'm getting down to 4C tonight. It's a big poop this winter thing.
