Young coconut germination

Featured Replies

Hi there, I just obtained few young coconuts, I mean those not dehusked, white ones. Whats the procedure of germinating them ? same as with dehusked ones ? Should I peel it before potting ?

Photos? I'm not sure I understand your description. What does "young" mean? To me that word means the nuts are immature rather than mature. Immature coconuts will not germinate. Are the coconuts inside their brown husk? If so, do they feel heavy or very light? Can you hear liquid sloshing inside?

I like to soak my coconuts in clean water for a couple days. Then fill a pot wide enough to hold each nut with potting mix. Note that each nut has 3 sides, 2 very rounded, 1 somewhat flatter. Place nut, flat side down, about half its height into the pot. Water and place pot somewhere very warm (over 25C) and humid. Be very patient. Coconuts germinate at their own pace, not yours. Expect to wait months. When it sends up a spike you will see the top of the husk cracking near the stem end. You will have to provide lots of light/sun, heat and humidity to your infant palm. Good luck.

The photo below is of a dwarf red spicata coconut sending up twin embryos. Twins are not the norm but do happen.

Meg any tips on potting mix ingredients? Pure sand okay? Perlite/vermiculite (alone or with potting soil) also okay?

Coconuts do grow in pure sand but I don't use it because of its weight. I mix palm-cactus soil with extra perlite for drainage.
