Biggest Chambeyronia houailou I have ever seen

Featured Replies

I was running garden errands yesterday with my father. We made a stop at Plant Creations and while there, I noticed this bad boy from about 150 yards away. " Look Dad, that's not an Adonidia over there with that strong leaf..." I walked closer and knew what it was right away. Just wanted to share with my friends on here--anyone who has seen a bigger one please tell us about it, or post a picture please! This is, for sure, the largest houailou I have ever seen. Enjoy!

Looks almost more like a Carpoxylon...

that's a monster for sure!

Wow, that one is huge.  Definitely one of the best looking palms around.  The keeled leaves are killer.

nice

By the lack of response, I assume my initial reaction is correct.

Well I can't grow Carpoxylon or Adonidia where I live, but I can grow this one as I have one growing fine. :)

Josh--the palm on the right looks like Ponapea ledermanniana... it is certainly not an houailou nor Carpoxylon. Just to clarify.

I'm asking because I can't recall ever seeing a mature h-lou. I have a couple babies that are moving along nicely.

I actually thought in first glance that it was a Carpoxylon too. Pretty palm. Was this at a private garden or park or where? Just curious.

It's a houliou. I talked to Stan this morning. He has an even bigger one in his yard (pic) that I grew from seed. Dale holton also has a big one. Good eye, mandrew

Great to know!

What's the defining character viz-a-viz hookeri? Looks like hookeri has a droopier, more rounded crown, instead of the umbrella pictured above.

It gives me something to look forward to when my babies grow up in 20 years . . . .
