Local Home Depot selling Dwarf Date Palms

Recommended Posts

As usual whenever I go to my local home depot, I check the garden center to see what they have in stock.  Usually its 3-4 headed majesty palms between 3 and 7 ft tall.  prices range from 12.99-39.99.  This time however around 12 Dwarf date palms were mixed in.  they were around 3-4ft tall, all 12.99.  I also noticed some small arcea palms around a foot tall for 2.99.  should i get one of the date palms?

12.99? If those are Phoenix roebelenii, 3 -4 feet tall, that's a STEAL

Looks like someone made a mistake in pricing somewhere down the line.

With any trunk at all, still a steal.

If you want one clear some space and get one. Or, if you can find a boy and girl, get two. (They're dioecious.) Get an extra and give it as a gift to someone you're trying to give the palm bug . . .

If it's blooming, admittedly a tough thing to see in plants like you describe. Still:

Pretty common here this time of year. They drop the price to dump the stock.

I've found some of these before her run the mid atlantic too.  Usually around late summer to fall is when you see them for very cheap.   I've gotten one with 2 feet of clear trunk before and only one other very small plant in its same pot, for 19.99.    That is very cheap for that siced plant.   I had it for 5 years and it grew to about 4 feet of clear trunk under my care.  It died after  being frozen twice one late fall,  coming back to life for another entire year, and suffering the same fate again with added freezing rain.  All times were accidental and not expected.    I also had one for 7 years that had 5.5-6' of clear trunk that also died the same way.   They were beautiful and I so angry with myself.

Anyway I would pick one up anyway.   They're great little palms if you can get passed the damn thorns. I've been blooded more ham a few times by them.

I bought mine around this time last year at Home Depot for $10. It was the only twin trunked specimen in a sea of clumps that featured 4 or more palms in one. I really wanted a single palm, but I'm happy with what I got. I'd say go for it.

I'm with you there.  I always prefer the single trunked ones.    They're just hard to find especially up north.

The Norfolk Botanical Garden has at least one in its conservatory; I halfway wondered if they could use a Lytocaryum in its place.  Here in Florida, they seem to do OK in partial shade as well as sun.
