Hello Everyone,

I had been a browsing visitor on Palm talk for awhile and now I have recently joined the IPS.

I have this Hyophorbe Verschaffeltii that I'm happy with BUT I have recently seen one at the  Brusseau home and garden in Vista, California (near the pool). I was wondering if anyone

here can confirm that I have a true Hyophorbe Verschaffeltii. His looked like it had a shorter crown-shaft and not so creamy of a trunk as mine. I have also looked up pictures and i see more like his than mine. Maybe one of us has a hybrid. they look so different. Here is a couple pictures of mine. Please share you thoughts. Thank you

Thanks Jason. I do like it too. It happens to be one of my favorite palms in my yard.

Wow. Pretty Impressive! I can't confirm but it almost looks like a Dypsis! But maybe an indica x verschaffeltii.

I was thinking the same thing - the colour is very indica but with a verschaffeltii form.  Great looking palm whatever it is.

I think it's a pure Spindle palm.

I think so, too. We have plenty of them over here and they look the same as your`s. It is probably a nice pure one.

Much appreciation.

Mine also has the really elongated crownshaft as well. I figured it was an age thing or something. Definitely spindle palm!

Bret,

Glad to hear that yours has a elongated crown shaft as well. Thanks for mentioning  that. I do like mine.

I'm still very curious as to why some have shorter crown shafts, as well as  a more recurved leaf than mine.

I have also noticed blueish crown shaft colors on other Spindles. I was thinking maybe age like you mentioned, plus mine gets a lot of FULL SUN.

Does yours get a lot of sun?  Thanks to everyone for confirming Spindle ID.

That is stunning and a tough grow here. I'm curious what part of California you're located in.

When my two spindles were younger and shorter they had gorgeous blue-green crownshafts covered with a powdery scurf. I think they eventually grow out of their splendid colors - pity. Hope yours doesn't.

I wonder how you get such a clean trunk, since I know Hyophorbe verschaffeltii or lagenicaulis able to keep dry leaves petioles for a long time.

Did you remove all these petioles? Actually it looks like a Dypsis , species which is self-cleaning.

BTW: Welcome on Palmtalk and thank you for posting and sharing pictures.

Matt,

I live in La Mirada, CA.

Philippe,

I do carefully remove the leaves.  I prefer the undressed look of that tree. I do the same  with my bottle palm.

When I remove them,  that is when I get to see the purple color. It starts the very next day and gets darker every day after. Eventually going away.

Regards

Erin,

I would say mine gets half day sun. The leaves are a bit of a blue-green as well, & also gets that purpleish, chocolatey colored crownshaft. Probably one of the prettiest crownshafts in my yard. Is that a Ravenea glauca growing behind it?

Bret,

Good eye. Yes it is. It actually set seed for the first time this year. Gave them to DoomsDave. I hope he has good luck with them.

Wow, that's great. Do you have another male Ravenea in the area?
