Good Palms for outdoors summer ct.

Featured Replies

I am thinking of putting potted palms into plastic containers in the summer with holes for the roots and putting them in the ground for the summer.  the soil is good and easy to dig up.  I already have a 5ft majesty as well as my 2 cocos and trachy. I am planning on doing this with only the majesty would you recommend this, if so are there any other affordable palms i could use for this landscaping idea?  I would prefer palms less like a fern as i already have the majesty and possibly a fan palm as well.  If this idea is not good how could i change it so it would work?

Seems like a lot of work.  Where will you store them in winter?    If in your house, that's a very dirty proposition.  You'll have to clean them throughly before you bring them in.

If your plan is to just use them as annuals, then any will do.  Washington robusta are fairly inexpensive, grow fast, and have the fans you seek.

I would suggest those.   The only Palm that might survive your winters is the needle palm    R.Hystrix   You could do a windmill in ground hit your going to have to heavily protect it every year of its life  most likely.

Now if you have a nice good sized greenhouse then I would say go for it and that it's worth the time money and effort.   Short of that you're looking at working a decent expenditure into your budget just to have good diced annual palms , or finding a place that rents them for the season   I've heard of places like that.

I'd definitely try Washingtonia robusta. I'm not sure where you'd find one in CT but they're very fast from seed, I planted mine in May and the first fan fronds emerged by August.

I'd try Trachycarpus fortunei as well, they keep growing when other palms have slowed considerably. Last winter mine kept growing until January.

When I say use as annuals, I mean they just get left out to freez, die and throw away with new ones replacing them the next year.    Perennial you'd keep and plant back out each year.
