Soil Solarization

Does anyone know whether soil solarization which is a laying of clear plastic onto the soil to kill soil pests can be used to heat the soil around tender palm species in winter

Sure . . .  and kill them palms in the process?

Palms are like any living plant and require air to breathe - both atmospheric and in the soil.

Hence no plastic.

Anyone else???

Sol, we have a weed inhibitor plastic which is black w/ tiny perforations to let water and air through.  Usually you'd clear the weeds, lay down the plastic and mulch over the top of it but I would probably work real good as a heat source if left uncovered....and it breathes.
