Everyone:

Recall a thread a while back about palm mistakes. As Mayor La Guardia might have said, this one "was a real beaut'."

A Caryota gigas near the power pole and a queen likewise. I think I documented it. I know I posted pics of it, probably too many times.

The power company sent people around in 2014 saying they'd send a contractor around to remove it, no cost to me! Music to my ears! Dance all the way to bank . . . .

But they didn't. Hello?

So, they came around again in 2016. Another dance to the bank? I called the contact guy. Again, and again.

And, as promised yesterday, the Crew of Doom came today! Like a team of well-choreographed Tasmanian Devils they just whacked both palms down in less than an hour, and left the pieces in a nice tidy pile.IMG_4736.thumb.JPG.4b4d6e0b5f2d812a883b9

It gets even better

About an hour later, a second troupe of Tazzes came in to finish up.

They brought the Mega Shredder of Doom. They were going to, and did, shred the Caryota gigas trunks!

A D I O S !

Things went very well.

Experience has shown that things don't always, especially relating to collateral damage.

There was pretty much none. All of my precious babies were completely unscathed.

The Tazzes rocked.

Previous crews included the infamous Rum-Drinking CavaliersTM,* who threw 40-pound leaf petiole pieces all over the place which smashed a few things up.

*My own pet name. Don't know if they were actually drinking rum, but they sure left a mess as if they might have. Would have been funny if they wore cavalier hats instead of the usual hard hats.

Not to worry. I have another C. gigas to pick up the torch.

Your message brings up another point: no damage to internet or electrical lines, both of which had gotten entangled in the gigas.

Here's the Stump of Gigas, with the ShoeTM for comparison.

The Shoe is 12.5" or 32 cm long. Size 13.

This was hard wood, you-all, and heavy too. And tough. Walk up to a trunking Caryota and give a knock-knock-knock like on Heaven's door, and you'll get a "clock clock clock" like you're hitting rock, or really heavy brick or ceramic. A royal, King or Washie sounds more like a watermelon, thunk thunk thunk. Much softer.

I'm kind of agog, at the lack of damage!

I know I couldn't have done as well. The Tazzes were pros! Their Giant Chain Saw undoubtedly helped, but they really were a team. It inspired me in my own work.

The picture below is taken by me standing on The Stump looking at my precious Actinokentia divaricata family. Not a scratch. Okay, a few Dypsis had their fronds ruffled a bit, but that was to keep anyone from tripping over them.

Some of the big trunk pieces were heave-ho'd out of the gap in the adjacent Caryota mitis.

No damage to any of them, either.

If anyone wants to carve a dwarf tiki, I have one piece of the Queen that got overlooked, about 18" 40 CM tall.

Frightening professional - that team.

Watching two big nice trees changing into dust within two hours, gives me a moment to take a deep breath.

But there was obviously no other option - so, it probably had to be done.
