With enough work and protection, I'm pretty sure you could grow palms in the Arctic. But at what point does it just not make sense? I'm in 9B and with enough work I could probably grow coconuts. But will I want to build a 40-50ft box when it gets large? Not a chance. But each to his own level, of enthusiasm.

If you’re willing to protect them like they did in the video than I would say YES! Go for it man, it fun and if your successful than you have bragging rights!

Araucaria is full hardy here, and common in gardens. And Trachycarpus fortunei also becoming more populair in gardens nowadays. And in my are we never protect them. Here at 52 degrees latitude north we have still mild winters with not a lot of frost normally thanks to the Gulfstream and Westerly winds.

 

The coldest we got in my area was minus 17 or maybe -18 C, but very rarely!

As far as New England and Trachys go, perhaps on Nantucket?
