Hi All.  I have a Dypsis leptocheilos that I got last spring (2015).  At the time it had three spears, all of which opened in late summer.  I figured it was just getting used to its new spot so all was good.  After winter and a particularly cold and windy couple of days around March it started to look more frazzled and had substantial brown tipping on the existing leaves.  I gave it some anti-fungal on and off through the spring and new growth never stopped so I figured we were good.  So now its mid September and although it again has three spears and the new spear continues to push upward, none of the three spears have opened.  I've given it Seaweed extract, Superthrive, and regular fertilizer since spring.

Any recommendations?

Hey Chris,

LOVE the photo you used for your icon.  Looks like it might be the same place I took mine.

I am also located in Orange County.  So we get similar weather. That said, I am in Laguna Hills and get more humidity and less heat than you likely get in Trabuco Canyon.

Point is, your  Teddy Bear looks like it needs a lot more water.

I would try really slow soaking it when you water.  These particular Dypsis love water.

Hope that helps.

Thanks!  That's looking towards Bora Bora from the (now closed) Bora Bora Lagoon Resort & Spa on Motu To'opua taken on our honeymoon in 2005. Cheers!

I run on a drip system so the slow part is no problem, but I'll try increasing the watering time for that zone. I love the Teddy Bear look and I hope it bounces back!

Hope that helps.

Me too, THANKS!

Chris,

Hammer is providing great insight. I have several teddies and until I increased the water and fertilizer, I was experiencing the same growing issues.

If it would help, you can stop by my garden and I could show you the results first hand.

Jim has a great garden and has made some great advances in the infrastructure of his garden this summer.  His palms are showing the positive results.

Take him up on that offer.

Hammer and Jim hit the nail on the head, and I offer a picture of what to look forward to if your teddy grows.

Mine get a lot of water, though they're far from swamp things.

We went to Le Meridian Bora Bora in 2011.  Absolutely incredible place.  It is my life's quest to recreate that place in my yard.

Thanks for the advice and the invite.  I'm always up for checking out a nice local garden!

This dry heat and wind has me worried... I've been soaking my Teddy Bear the last several days (that sounds strange, unless you're a palm person! :D)
