Hi All

Jut got this guy ( or I should say guys as it has two stem and I don't think it is a clustering palm?) It is beautiful and healthy ...

It is in 100 L bag and over 2.5 m tall ( from tip of new unopened frond) ...

IMG_8017.thumb.JPG.3cf11845e6c47e9c664f0

I was thinking to plant it near to our new Granny Flat , we dug and unfortunately we hit the rock ( I hate it) , so no way we could go deep there...

IMG_8024.thumb.JPG.c591e117e6837179aae77

Now I am not sure if I can find another place for it :(  my question is :

1- Before I find a final home for this, how often I should water it...every day? every other day ? It is in full sun...

2- Can I build a raised bed over the site ( where we hit the rock) and plant it? I am not sure if it is a good idea as what would happen to the drainage at the bottom of the raised bed still will be the rock

3- Can I buy a huge pot and keep it there forever ?anyone has even done this for a long time?

Thanks for any input

I think watering every day would do the trick, and I heard, but I am no expert on this palm, that it can tolerate full sun. I would NOT recommend building a raised bed over the site, because then it would be like having a pot connected to the ground and if it gets damaged, all the roots are exposed (the palm would hate that), and the whole thing could fall over! You could get a big wooden box for large palms, but eventually after a few years I think it would want to come out.

Here is a Palmpedia page on this palm, you may find some good information here! http://www.palmpedia.net/wiki/Dypsis_leptocheilos

Actually, the Palmpedia page says it loves water! But I would not completely over water it, maybe once a day, in this case.

Whoa!

that thing is GORGEOUS! :o:wub::yay:

I'd stand in the front yard and gloat at passing motorists!

Try to put it in the ground. They will take long term potting, but their full glorious [expletive] glory is in the ground, good soil plenty of water.

Give it at least half a day's sun. In a few more years, you'll have a plant like mine, and I promise all eyes will be delighted!

1- How often you would water while it is in the 100 l bag ? it has at least 8 hours full sun

2- What type of soil it prefers?

3- is this two palms or they can have multi trunk?

Honestly no... In my climate it does fine in full sun and I don't water it often, it gets enough water from the rain. I hear it is a different story out in CA. I'm not familiar enough with your climate to answer unfortunately.

1- How often you would water while it is in the 100 l bag ? it has at least 8 hours full sun every other day; one good way to check is to give it a good drink, let the extra water drain out, nudge it with with your toe; that will give you an idea of well-watered weight; when it gets light, give it a drink, but, if in doubt, give it a drunk

2- What type of soil it prefers? Iv'e got clay with lots of amendments in it, which they seem to love. Holds water which they also love.

3- is this two palms or they can have multi trunk? Two plants, I'd leave them together

4- and please post the photo of yours :)will do, though it's dark now

another 2 questions for you now ;)

1-how long do I have time to get it out of the bag in your opinion ?

2- did it grow from seed in the bag ( smaller pot)  or just dug from ground and place in the bag recently ?

Great find Mohsen. Yes these do take full sun. They love humus rich soil, and in warm weather if you keep the water and nutrients up to them they are fast. I have two big flowering ones in my Perth garden :crying: and I can't grow them down here. Well maybe but not in the same way. They have a high potassium need in hot dry weather especially.

This is probably my favourite species of palm.

In the bag you can water it every day. It will love that. If you get over 35C water it twice a day. Over 40C 3 times a day. They do much better in the ground of course.

Mohsen, I cant see any problems filling the hole to the top  with the best available potting mix and placing your Lepto on top and then  mounding  around it\ with  how ever many bags of P/mix are needed then heavily mulching to stop soil runoff  when you water it and place large rocks around your mound.. Why fill the hole to the top, simple coz it will fill with water.  Pretty simple n easy solution so you can get yr Lepto "Inground"..    Pete

They are truly magnificent Dave...

I think there is no way mine becomes like them unless they go in ground and not even the raised bed garden :(

I am more worry about the drainage, I had similar location in my property and I plant a Ravenea rivularis as I know they love water and dont care if there is bad drainage but I am not sure if Lepta could be happy in poor drainage ?

Mohsen, no Bullshit, you could cut open the 100ltr bag and place it "ontop" of the  pure rock beside the hole and mound the sides, and when you add 10" plus" bags of the "Best" potting mix (( 65 ltr bags) plus sand, and 5 bags of compost ( 65ltr)  and   add some big rocks in there and of course around the mound as I said above and it will profusely send its roots sideways and bite onto the surface of the rock...

Leptos are no different to Archos the way the send the "Bulk" of there roots sideways not deep down, 100ltrs is a Big heavy bag, you prob wont even have to tie it, tie it if need be or just add heavy rocks ontop.

"Trust me" . all will be good and a Piece of cake to get her out of that bag inground, even if she is on pure rock, I bet when you cut open the bag roots will be encircling itself looking for an escape "sideways"..  ;);)   Pete

still I am not comfortable doing that :(

the thing I cant understand is that when you plant over large rock shelves, what would be the drainage...

For instance, where I want to plant it ( and we hit the rock), water would stay there for days and only would be gone by vaporisation , so if I plant it over the rock, the roots will be sit in still water ...wouldn't that harm most of palms ? what I am missing here?

I am thinking somewhere else if possible, I have 2 option which would get all day full sun...I believe that should be OK as it is on all day full sun in bag anyway

Mohsen, get off the fence and plant it, a bit of water 2 ft down for a few days isnt gonna hurt it plus all the soil n compost woud soak it up not to mention the Lepto....   "Just Do It"      If you are SO worried about drainage put     rocks     ontop of  the rock shelf then add some pot mix and sit your Lepto ontop and then build your mound..Too easy..

I'm kind of wondering the same thing. I've heard they're pretty sensitive to frost, but they put out fronds so fast I don't think they've got too much trouble growing out of it. I'm tempted to say they're slightly less hardy than foxtails overall.
