What is the difference between Corypha Umbraculifera, Utan, & Lecomtei?

I've been trying to find the answer to this question for months and my internet searches aren't turning up much information.

The leaf is more deeply split on C. utan than C. umbraculifera.

I don't know much about C. lectomei, but Palmpedia suggests that it's not quite as massive as the other 2.

Tom,

I know only Corypha umbraculifera, our Talipot in Sri Lanka (see talipot or Corypha in search engine)

In order to see pics and understand the difference between two species, I sometimes visit Palmpedia encyclopedia and older posts on Palmtalk.

BTW: welcome on Palmtalk!

In my opnion the best looking palms are talipot and c.lectomei.while c.utan is simply massive in fronds and looks very crude.

And in c.utan there is this Corypha Macropoda palm this is also a massive palm but the leaves are more similar to the  colour of bismarkia.

When time permits I will try to post stills for comparison.

Love,

Kris.

Also, don't forget poor old Corypha taliera!

As far as differentiating them, apparently C.lecomptei doesn't get as tall. It has black edges along the petioles and a bluish tint in the leaves. C.utan has stiffer, more deeply divided leaves and has yellow/white/orange colouration to the leafbases and petioles. C.umbraculifera is all green and just massive. (As all the above photos demonstrate)

C.utan is the fastest growing and tallest

A great genus that should be planted more widely! Funny thing is c.utan is planted all around Darwin in suburban gardens...I wonder if people didn't realise what they were getting into!

Today shall we see visuals of C.Utan,This palm was situated at around 1km from my residence. The still you are seeing was taken 5 to 6 years back. And this palm was removed due to lack of tree trimmers in that area.Since i was told lots of weeds started growing on this Utan.So was not visibly pleasing to their eyes.I did have many stills of this plam but could not find them at the moment.

Nevertheless few stills that iam going to post here are sufficient to explain how a standard form corypha Utan would look in once residential garden.BTW this is not my favorite variety among the Corypha's.

C.Utan_03W.thumb.jpg.f6ad42b67ef4d503940

C.Utan_02W.thumb.jpg.9e27fb965a97d7ade39

These stills were taken standing on the other side of the 100 feet main road.Since i was finding it difficult to cover the whole palm in one frame..:D

Dear Tom Petroski,

Are you there..since you have not interacted in this post after seeing those stills ?

Love,

Kris.

Again thank you Kris,

But what shall we see tomorrow?

I like to start the day (european time) with your posts!
C. utan is nice but one needs a huge space to grow it.

As for C.utan, there are two native forms found here in Australia...the Queensland form and the Northern Territory form. Both are distinctly different as seedlings, and both have different crowns as adults. I don't know the origin of the palm in the photo above, but it has the same crown as the Queensland form, with the distinct hanging lower leaves.

Kris couldn't have been more precise in the description of Utan.

I finally went to Fairchild Tropical Garden in Miami and saw a few Utans in person.

I also found it interesting to see the twisting shape of the trunk. I'd never noticed or seen it before in all of the pictures I've obsessed over.

Thailand has a lot of Corypha lecomtei.  They tend to be more upright and perhaps not quite as large as some of the other species but very beautiful.  Here's a pic I took during the IPS Biennial in Thailand.

Hawaii Island (Big Island), leeward coast, 19 degrees N. latitude, south Kona mauka at approx. 380m (1,250 ft.) and about 1.6 km (1-mile) upslope from ocean.

No record of a hurricane passing over this island (yet!).

Summer maximum rainfall - variable averaging 900-1150mm (35-45") - Perfect drainage on black volcanic rocky soil.

Nice sunsets!
