FREE Franken Brahea seeds

I planted 5 in baggy with sphagnum peat/perlite mix.  All 5 germinated in mid-January (4 months) with no bottom heat applied and they're still too small to photograph.  The others I planted in individual pots and none of these have germinated yet.  These have been outside but we've only had a couple of winter days so far!

4 days ago, I scraped with a knife this seed in two areas ( lost 3 doing this) until I saw the embryo and here's the result. I just hope it does not rot.

I've been applying bottom heat in a container covered with saran wrap, a mini greenhouse if you will.  So far nothing from this or some coccothrinax I got around the same time.

had two in a bag of moist perlite ever since I got them so far nothing . where is the best area to expose on these seeds? I really want these to succeed

I put the seeds in a Tupperware with peat moss & bottom heat. Forgot about them like Dave instructed. Decided to checked on them and had 2 that sprouted ...

how cold can these seedlings get before they get damaged? id like to try to plant one outside that has sprouted but don't want to waste a good seed

Keep them in the cups till they get a few leaves, then move them to larger pots, or in the ground, if you can put them someplace they won't get stepped on when they're small.

They're best in full sun once they grow a bit, in my experience, which is at least half a day's direct sunlight.

Remember, if they're true to form as to the parent, they will get large, much larger than either B. armata or B. brandeegii.

Mine have started now germinating (at least three so far) after they have spent all winter and spring outdoors in a pot with coir. They need hot conditions here to germinate.

Brahea seeds are generally really slow to germinate. I've had armata seeds sit for over a year before deciding to pop their heads out of the soil!

Frankies loved the recent inferno on my balcony. They are looking very happy and are growing faster (in 20 cm high liners of course).

Seedlings are surely bluish. Very reminiscent of some armata seedlings, scream...

Some preliminary conclusions  based on those three franken-seedlings compared to regular armata seedlings. Former have broader first strap leaf with softer tissue. Also all three seedlings have silver tinges (not quite apparent in the picture), while on armata seedlings from same mother this trait is variable.  I will post also pictures from armata seedlings for comparison. Latter are already on third or more strap leaf and still leaves remain narrower.

@Phoenikakias The B armata seedlings are growing so slowly even in Athens? Here a pic of one seedling that germinated in spring 1986 taken in December of the same year:

I GOT ONE TO POP!!!

 

I hesitate to post a pic, for fear of jinxing the whole thing.  But it was happily sending 6 inches of root out curing around on the surface, so I was able to easily and harmlessly pick it out and put it in its own pot.  I small point of green sticking out now.  

 

And now, we wait...
