I want to surround my pool with coconut palms (and other palms of course), but am undecided on which variety to plant. The ones I see a lot of are Dwarf Malayan and Maypan. I really like the look of Panama tall. Anybody have experience with these varieties? I'm looking to buy about 10 coconut palms with 5-10' of trunk. If anyone knows of a good source for these in Broward, please PM me.

I want this area full of palms, no more grass!

I really like this variety. It has a curved trunk, full crown and thick trunk. Any ideas what it is?

The one in your pic looks to be a Jamaican tall, which might be too LY susceptible for your location. Your options on variety are more limited if you plan to buy mature specimens, but Maypan is a common one that shouldn't be hard to get, and it replicates that look close enough.

The good news is that coconuts grow quickly, so you can buy a few mature Maypans and plant some small Panama talls too to get the look you really want. I'd take a look at Romney Farms in Homestead, which I believe is now run by Carol Romney. You can get some Panama talls from them that will be pure, and they grow incredibly quickly and have a similar growth to the Jamaican tall (though they often don't curve as drastically).

Here's some pictures of Panama talls growing at Fairchild:

You might also try your luck with a Fiji Dwarf, which can also be purchased at Romney Farms. They perform better in Florida than the Malayan dwarves, and still have the boled base, but they exhibit very slow growth. They're also said to have a very low LY susceptibility.

Keith, thanks for the info on Romney Farms. I also see they have a Red spicata variety. I will check them out

A few more pics of the tall ones. They are on Virginia Key.

The Red Spicatas at Fairchild are nice. I found a sprouted one last time I went a little over a year ago.

Adam,

I would suggest that you plant a couple of each of the 3 Malayan Dwarf types:  the Green Malayan, the Golden Malayan, and the Yellow Malayan.  The Malayan Dwarfs are known to flower and fruit at a younger age than other varieties available in South Florida.  For the other one of the 10, I would plant either  Maypan, which will grow fast due to the hybrid vigor of them (they are a hybrid cross between a Malayan Dwarf and the Panama Tall), or try either a pure Panama Tall if you can find one or a local Jamaican Tall from a parent tree that didn't succumb to Lethal Yellowing.  There seems to be some resistance of some of the Jamaican Talls down there to Lethal Yellowing, as when I lived in South Florida back in 2000 and 2001, there were some nice mature very healthy looking Jamaican Talls that showed no signs of Lethal Yellowing and no signs of being injected with Tetracycline.

John,

I took your advice. I planted 4 green Malayan. I plan to plant some maypan, panama tall and others, but could not find good size plants in my area.

I think it's native to Malaysia, but it arrived to Florida through Jamaica.

I think you will be happy with them, and they start producing at a younger age than the talls.  It's good that you want a variety of them though.  I have at least 6 or 7 different varieties in my yard (a total of 8, but a couple of them may be the same variety; sometimes it's hard to tell for sure when they are small).

Looking good, Adam.  I am very jealous.  There is NOTHING like coconut palms to create the truly tropical look around a pool!
