What is the largest collection of palms in the world?

(By largest I mean number of species.)

Nong Nooch I would say for sure. Their collection is massive and has cost lots of money to create. Jeff probably has the most impressive private collection hands down.

A lot of rare palms as well?? The largest collection of species....ahhhh yea. Nong nooch consist of hundreds of acres. There's literally thousands of palms planted throughout the garden. And in most cases, there can be up to 10,20 maybe 50 of each species. Even the best palm collectors that go there, experience "palm overload" by the end of the first day. It can be exhausting. And over whelming.

Thanks everyone, it looks like I'll have to plan a trip to Nong Nooch  the next time I'm in Thailand. :D

I am experiencing some of that palm overload exhaustion looking around some very nice gardens in south-east QLD. I don't know whether I would cope with the likes of Hawaii and Nong Nooch. Great post topic.

If you do go to Nong Nooch, I highly recommend the accommodations on the property, as the town of Pattaya isn't the greatest.

You don't think so? I haven't been there yet. It would be nice to just take a day trip from Bangkok, but it looks a little far so I think I'll take your advice and see about staying there.

I think they said they had over 1100 species at the biennial  in Nong  Nooch. You will not see it all in one day, staying at the gardens is the right thing to do. Good accomodation and swimming pools. The RSBG has over 500 species but not all have been planted out yet, a lot will go out this spring

Hello all,

I have recently been updating our lists at the Palmetum in Santa Cruz de Tenerife and we have about 570 palm species, mostly from the islands of the world.

With a portion of Nong Nooch's 1,100 species collection not open to the public, Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden with 900 species is possibly the world's largest publicly accessible collection.

Thanks Ed, but I'm small potatoes in comparison to some of these others. NOW....to actually be able to see many palm species in habitat, that's something I can say I've been fortunate to have done over the years and that's really special to me. Recently my travels through Sarawak, Borneo not only "kicked my butt", but really made a lasting impact.
