    How far north in CA and FL have Veitchias been tested?  Any chance they might be stronger in NorCal than Roystonea?

    I strongly doubt they'll make it in No-Cal for any major period of time. They hate the cool, and the cold even worse than Roystoneas. Roystoneas that look good are far more common in gardens than Veitchias are. I suppose you might find a seriously serious warm warm spot in, say, the Berkeley Hills, which might stay warm enough for long enough for them to survive. Or, someone's warm microclimate garden elsewhere.

    The palms pictured are in Beverly Hills/West Hollywood, which aside from being in a warm area, are also part of an urban heat island.

    That is the very first large scale use of Veitchias in California that I've heard of. For me, when it gets even a little cold, they just die -- GAK. I honestly thought the photographer had a case of bad ID when he told me. Delighted to be wrong, of course!

    I suspect some of our San Diegans could probably point to a few plantings too, especially down in the south part of their county.

     Thanks for sharing the pictures I love the way they look wish I had some in my yard.  Think we need to send someone down there to start collecting seed to try to propagate them. Lol

    I should qualify my above statement:

    Those are the very first V I've seen used in a commercial planting in California.

    There was a Veitchia arecina in Larry Black's yard that did well and set a bunch of seed, some of which I have and most of which grew and are growing rapidly. Larry took it out - it was turning into a monster, attacking him, his wife, his grandkids. Gorgeous, though. Roots busting through the base of the trunk.
