Bought Few Power Tools for Palm Trimming work

Kris

Recommended Posts

Dear Friends,

Few years now iam have been using chain saw, hack saw, knives and other tools for my palm fronds trimming work. But always felt these tools either being too heavy or too small for the job. And chain saw is too noisy and heavy while using it on a ladder, and to cut fronds to was too much for the job.

But recently i came across angle grinders, which were being sold very cheap in online store. So i ordered one which was light in weight, less noisy and came with 5 blades for different purpose as a combo offer.

I really want to know what are you opinion on using this machine for palm fronds trimming work ?

Because using knives or saw on corypha's and other thick and hard fronds varieties it was difficult and in some cases the cut was not neat enough..

Thanks and love,

Kris.

This Battery operated power tool is even lighter than the one i have bought, but this is still not available here..this unit is so small and less noisy compared to A/c operated one.And one can use it in any location or while using a ladder, since it does not need mains to function..

Kris:

Ever try a pole saw?

I have three.

2 are power and one is manually operated.

The power ones are electric though gas powered models are also available.

Thanks for your suggestion, but those tools are not yet available here.

Dear Ante,

Yes your right.

Now what caught my attention is the disc that is used for angle grinders now come with chain saw kind of teeth design, those could make our palm trimming job a breeze !

Those videos are in the next post.

Dear Alex,

Yes what you have said is true..for that matter most power tools are quite dangerous if not handled carefully.

But after using powered chainsaw far a couple of years now I felt the need for some compact machinery that could do this job(for cutting palm fronds,to cut suckers and seed stalks).

A clean shaved face looks good, likewise a clean and trimmed garden is a sign of well maintained garden. And there will be less of rodents and bats..

Thanks and love,

Kris.

If I could only have 2 tools, they would be the cordless Sawzall and the Fiskars pruning stik

http://www2.fiskars.com/Products/Gardening-and-Yard-Care/Tree-Pruners/Pruning-Stik-Tree-Pruner-9234

Between them (and a ladder) there is nothing out of reach anymore.  The Fiskars also comes in a

long version.  It is great to for pruning cycads with minimal blood loss.  Target online has them for

<$40.

I have used the Lancelot blade on a 4.5" grinder for sculpting large wood pieces, and as long as the piece is firmly anchored, and the proper safety equipment is used i never had any concerns.....but I was a professional arborist for 30+ years  and i personally would never use an angle grinder with an unguarded blade (if it is even possible to put a guard on it)  for trimming trees.

There are loads of better, and safer options.

A reciprocating saw (sawzall) would be much safer. An angle grinder would put the blade close to your limbs.

Seems like the best way would be to make a preliminary cut removing most of the weight of the frond, and then a secondary cut to clean up the palm's appearance.

I agree. Unfortunately Kris, what you bought is totally unsuitable for the intended job. Battery powered (like Dewalt) reciprocating saw is the real answer to your needs and even then you would have to use a specially long blade.
