Nice. Poinciana are really in full bloom in Brevard County now!

This year Delonix regia seem to be in fuller bloom than in years past -- except for mine! My tree is 30 feet high and has never, ever had a bloom! A neighbor down the street planted one out last year. It looks to be less than 6 feet high -- and it has blooms! I also have a 30 feet high Jacaranda mimosifolia tree I planted as a 6 footer back in 1999. Absolutely no blooms this year. In fact, I only had one bloom last year, and that was the only time. I sure don't understand it. The other day I noticed some of the Peltophorum dubium (yellow poiniciana) are starting to form blooms, but none on my trees so far.

You all have a pretty nice microclimate there for being as far north as you are. :greenthumb:

Howdy 🤠

You scream,

I scream

We all SCREAM

For Delonix regia!

I drove up into town (Lake Placid) today to check my post office box and photographed some Delonix regia trees along the way. I'm still annoyed that my 30 feet tall tree has never bloomed. I started some new Delonix regia trees from seed a friend brought back from St. Thomas. One is growing especially fast in its pot and I plan on planting that one soon.

Some of the Peltophorum dubium (yellow poinciana) trees are starting to bloom. The one below is a small one.

I had a royal poinciana at a previous home in  Cape Coral...still live there just different home.  Anyway, my tree was huge and perfect but would hardly get a bloom where all others around the city looked great.  After a couple years of nothing, I decided to NOT fertilize my lawn under the area of the tree.  Also was sure to let it have a dry spell in Winter.  That May and June the tree was covered...you could hardly see the green leaves.  No lawn fertilizer and a bit drier in Winter is my advice.  Never fertilized it but once a year after the bloom with a palm fertilizer after that .  Try that and see what next year brings.

I too was going to say Walt was treating his trees too nicely.  :-)

Land O Lakes FL, a suburb on the North Side of Tampa, FL

Summers are great, 90f/32c in the day & 70f/21c at night with plentiful rain & sun

Winters are subtropical with occasional frosts and freezes. Tropical cyclones happen.

We have a few Royal palms in the warm microclimates but Coconuts freeze.

I am a Kayaker, Hiker, Bicyclist, and amateur Photographer that loves the outdoors.

There's just odd things going on with my property. I bought my property in February of 1998, planted a 6 feet Jacaranda mimosifolia about a year later. It was only last year (2015) that it got just one small clump of blooms. I figured finally, maybe in 2016 it will get more blooms. No such luck. About five years ago I bought two more Jacaranda mimosifolia from Crowley's Nursery in Sarasota County. Both of these trees are big disappointments. I only get one or two (at most small bunches of blooms).

My 30 feet high Delonix regia has never bloomed, as I have already said. I also have a Peltophorum africanum that is about 20 feet high. Some years I get blooms, some years I don't. Right next to this tree is a Peltophorum dubium. This tree can go several years without a bloom, then the following year it will bloom.

I read in a book that dry winters do induce many flowering tropical trees to bloom. As far as fertilizer, I don't fertilizer my grass on my trees. I only fertilize my palms and tropical shrubs.

I have four species of tabebuia trees and they all bloom with seemingly no problem. I have a ceiba speciosa that exploded with blooms last fall, after two previous years of just sparse blooms.

Here is a nice one a few streets over from my house: image.thumb.jpg.6819b3fefb380744bb907bb9

It came out dark so I had to tweak it some.

Walt, we've had a royal Poinciana planted on our garden lot since 2012. It is 10' tall and 20' wide and has never bloomed. We have blooming trees all around us. Drives my husband nuts. He also fusses about our silk floss tree. We're lucky it gets even one bloom per year.

Meg, I don't know what's up with my property (soil wise). I even have many species of palms that will not grow. By that I mean they grow, at best, one-tenth their normal speed. I have a Copernicia alba I planted back in 2002 -- and it's not bigger today (and I've tried two other species of Copernicia with the same results). But of all the palm species that refuse to grow for me, what really flabbergasts me is Washingtonia robusta. They simply will not grow hardly at all. I've tried probably at least 20 of them, planting them in various locations, and no matter the location the result is always the same. They just don't want to grow, and they only hold a partial crown of fronds.

As far as blooming trees, another small species of tree (I grew from seed from a tree in Phoenix, Arizona) that will not bloom for me is Caesalpinia pulcherrima (although it may be a different variety or species). I think I started this tree from seed about 10 years ago. In any event, it's never, ever produced a single flower! I can understand maybe it only blooming sparsely -- but no bloom at all? I like the small tree, regardless, but flowers would certainly make it nicer. I took the two below pics today.
